Thank you to everyone that has replied. I started the Metformin XR on 4/5 at 500 mg/day and increased it on 4/12 to 1000 mg/day. So far I have not really had any side effects. My doctor wants me to get up to 2000 mg/day. I'm really hopeful that this will help me ovulate on my own after reading some of your replies. If anything happens I'll let you know.
Metformin worked wonderfully for me. I'm 5'4" and was approx 118 lbs prior to starting the Met. The Met caused me to lose about 5 lbs. I've remained consistent at that weight now for over 3 yrs. My cycles used to be all over the place (30-50+days). With the Met, I'm 32 days almost every cycle. I conceived DS after approx 6 mons on Met, and am currently 4 mons pg with #2.
Started Met today and am a little scared about side effects but I am truly hopeful now for the first time in ages. I will update regularly on cycle regulation, skin effects, etc. Hopefully this does the trick!
hey Nina09...good luck to u...I'm in the same boat, haven't yet started my Met and am scared of possible side effects. I'll be watching for updates...so keep us posted !
MissCET, how are you? I would like to know, have you ever had fasting insulin and glucose levels done? How underweight are you? I just think I should take Met but my dr says I'm too thin, I'm 5' 9 and weigh 128 lbs, and my fasting insulin and glucose levels are actually a little below the range, so that is why he says I don't need it... but I see it has worked for you and you are underweight... also, are you ttc? please let me know if it works for you! thanks...
Reena- Thanks for the encouragement! On day 4 of Met XR and have not had any major side effects yet, just a twinge of nausea in the morning which goes away with eating. I have noticed a slight reduction in acne so far. Let us know when you start!
Almodina- My BMI is 21 and I am not insulin resistant. Studies have proven that Met works for lean patients regardless of IR, as proof from this thread. You should discuss this w/ your Doc. Mine was a little resistant at first to prescribe it but when I presented my case to her at the 2nd visit she prescribed it.

Sorry for the late response. I have never had fasting insulin and glucose levels done. I'm 5ft 8 and weight 130 lbs so very similar to you.
I'm not ttc at the moment, but am hoping to start within the next year so want to get my body as prepared as possible. Speaking with my specialist doctor he thinks that met is successful with women regardless of weight - i think there is alot of confusion. I have met with my normal GP and he was shocked that met was prescribed to me!
oh yeah, I'm tolerating the metformin pretty much fine so far, it took about 2 weeks to ramp up to the full dose. I first tried getting to the full dose too fast, and it made me pretty sick.
