My Mood: Points: 5,133.77 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 5,133.77 | That is an interesting question, i am allergic to sulfa, and when i went on metformin, i ballooned up 25lbs in a month... the doctors all know i am allergic to sulfa.... so i hope they would've looked at my chart and seen that allergy before putting me on it. It would explain how with most PCOS woman it's the miracle drug, but with me it wasn't. Good question, i hope someone has anweres for you.

My Mood: Points: 5,133.77 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 5,133.77 | My allergic reaction to Sulfa, funny story.... they gave it to me for a bladder infection, and I woke up to get ready for work and my lips were swelled up. I tried to call in, and they said no, so I had to face the public with fat lips.
I went to the bathroom alot and had heartburn with Met, but the only complaint I really had is, I gained 25lbs in 1 month. Crazy. And it stayed. I finished my perscription, then stopped. I can't afford to blow up anymore. anyway...

Just 3 weeks ago I was on Met, Spiro, and Yaz. I found out I was allergic to Sulfa by accident when I had a sinus infection when given an antibiotic about 2 months ago, and reaction wasn't nice, but bareable with Benedryl. I lie to you all not last Thursday I had the same allergic reaction I had when I found out I was allegic to the antibiotic, but this was magnified 100x worse because I broke out ALL over my body even in my ears and head. It got so bad that I had to go to the ER to get it under control, because my body was laughing at the Benedryl. My hands had swollen up and my knees were so swollen that I could barely walk. It took about 2 days for some of the soreness to go away from the swelling and the scratching. I go to the doc tomorrow and I'm sure going to as if any of these drugs have Sulfa in them.

I was on a sulfa antibiotic years ago and had this reaction. My doctor knows I have this allergy yet I am on met. What should I do??? I don't have an appt until May 1. I'm not having hives or anything. I had the normal gastro side effects that go with me that seem to be improving with time and better food choices. Maybe I will call my pharmacist.

Metformin is especially useful for people who are allergic to sulfa drugs or are prone to hypoglycemia; it cannot be used in people who have kidney failure or severe cardiac or respiratory disease. People who take metformin should not drink alcohol.
