Default Metformin for thin cysters TTC?

Hi Ladies,

I was wondering how many thin cysters have had sucess with Metformin? Did it help you regulate your cycle and/or restore ovulation and/or conceive? How long before you saw an effect?

I know there are many medical articles that say Metformin is beneficial for thin or non-IR cysters, so I am interested to hear your experiences.

Cheers,
Nicole

My old OB/GYN mentioned using it when she made the remark that I "might be PCO but you aren't trying to get pregnant, so it isn't a big deal"-note I said OLD OB/GYN. I see the new one Thursday. I would be interested in finding that out as well-although not necessarily for TTC rather for tx the PCOS sx.

I don't have IR, but I've been on Met for about a year and a half. Been regular the whole time I've been on it. And it took about 2 months to get my first period on it. Besides the side effects, I love how much better I feel. I'm mainly on it TTC. No results yet. My doc wants to take me off of Met and put me on fertility. But I'm not sure I wanna go off Met, since I feel so good.

Hi Nicole,

I am borderline IR and started taking Metformin in June 2005. I weighed in at 134lbs at the time and got my first 'natural' AF in August and took Clomid as prescribed. I am now seven weeks pregnant and feel great. I did change my diet to low carb/no sugar which also assisted in weight loss and I am now 116lbs. I personally feel that weight is too low for me but despite eating more carbs, nothing has changed. I still have the typical Metformin 'stomach upset' but am slowly learning which foods trigger this reaction. The downside is that being pregnant, I am craving sweet stuff again so that's kinda tough to deal with at times. I'm still a firm believer that 'a little of what you fancy does you good'! Good luck to you!!!

I'm on it, not TTC or IR, and I'm a thin cyster. I can tell a huge difference when I'm on it versus when I'm not. I'm regular on it, nothing without it. The facial hair growth slows to nothing while I'm on it. I have no doubt it is working for me. My RE believes that all PCOS patients can benefit from Met.

Hello! I am new to this, but have finally been diagnosed with PCOS. I say finally because I thought that I had this several years ago, but no doctor would believe it since I am thin. My new OB just put me on Metaforin and I was wondering the same thing...whether it will really work for me or not. Do all of you that are taking and see results feel that it happened pretty quickly or does it vary by person. Thanks!

I have been on 1500 mg of met since august (1000 before that starting in June 2005) Still no AF! I took 10 days of provera and had a tiny bit of a period (very light for a couple days) I am still really hoping to get my cycle back to normal, I have not had AF naturally since November 2004.

I'm a thin cyster (was 5'7" 135ish) who concieved on Metformin. Wasn't particularly ttc, but very grateful for the little one growing there now. I was only on 1000/day I think... or was it 500... My dr had me take it through the first trimester, since it helps with hormone regulation and after that the placenta is making enough of its own hormones to sustain itself.
I did feel better on it (after the initial tired as a dog phase), and it took about 3-5 months for AF to show up after starting. Then she was regular. I apparently didn't end up taking enough to get my testosterone down enough to stop the hair growth, but my dr said he would increase it next time and that should help.

I'm a thinnish cyster TTC Well, TTC starting in the spring... need an emotional break. Anyway, someone just today told me that thin cysters have a much harder time conceiving because our hormones are even more out of whack than overweight cysters. Any truth to that? I guess physiologically, it does make sense. I just feel like I am constantly slapped in the face by PCOS... so reading this thread and seeing all the baby charts makes me feel a lot better.. gives me more hope!!

I've read that too. Don't know if it's true or not, but I guess it makes sense in a way. At any rate, merely losing a bit of weight is unlikely to help us. Still, many of us thin-cysters do manage to get pregnant

Default met & hoping to conceive

hello ladies,
i am new to this site & have a few questions. i was diagnosed 4 years ago with PCOS. i would go a while being regular & then i guess my body got bored of that. longest i have gone without AF is 8 months & right now i am almost breaking my record. anyway... dr put me on 1500 mg glucophage 3 months ago (nothing happening) & when i called him the other day to tell him i am seeing no results & would like to try for baby #2 he put me on prometrium which i haven't started yet because i don't know what it is exactly. have any of you been on the same combo and if so, what did it do?
thanks

Hi, I'm on Metformin, but not Prometrium. Prometrium is just prosegterone -- it will induce an AF. Hard to say if the Metformin has helped me -- I do get AF on my own, just not very regularly -- but I'm pregnant at the moment, and I suspect that the Metformin helped.

I'm still on the Met, even though my doctor siad to stop taking it when I got pregnant. I think I will take it at least until we detect a heartbeat, and maybe until the end of the first trimester. Those progesterone suppostories really are messy things!! The fertility doctor put me on them just case a precautiopn, since I have miscarried twice this year. Good luck with the Met/prometrium combo, hope you get that BFP soon!!
