Hi,
I'm new here and had a quick question for all you "Thin Cysters" who have the lovely PCOS tummy...Did going on Metformin help you lose weight in your abdomen?
I would consider myself thin (5'4", medium build, a muscular 131 lbs, size 4-6) but have a pot belly that I can't seem to get rid of, no matter how much cardio/yoga I do. I'm on BCP and have been since I was diagnosed around 6 years ago (which helped me to lose the 15 lbs I randomly put on prior to diagnosis). I don't have the hair loss or acne associated with PCOS, just the abdominal fat and I absolutely hate it.
I'm going to see a specialist next Thursday and want something more than the "take BCP and you will be fine" attitude that I have gotten from my family doctor and the specialist she referred me to (I'm seeing someone else this time). I am looking for suggestions re: things to talk to my doctor about regarding weight loss - I work out, eat heathily (vegetarian) and don't know what else I can do to lose the fat without stopping eating completely....Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!
For me, personally, Met didn't do anything to reduce my belly, although I don't have much of one to begin with. Met seemed to either make me gain a few pounds or retain water. I just felt 'thicker' while taking it. But it's worth a try. It works for a lot of people, so it might be just the right drug for you.
I think BCPs are so interesting. They worked really well for me and I never had any problems with them, but as soon as I stopped taking mine, I instantly lost 10 pounds. So it's funny how they sometimes make people either lose or gain weight...

This isn't scientific, but it seems that thin gals tend to gain and heavier gals tend to lose. I guess it depends on the person though, I've heard of gain, loss, and no change on met. For me it's no change. I think if you want to lose, if you start working out and watching your carbs, you'll have a better chance of losing.

I lost weight on Met. I went from 125-116 lbs over a 3 month period. Mostly b/c it made me nauseated.

Thanks ladies - the thing is that I do consistently work out, I walk pretty much everywhere, have a (relatively) low fat diet and when I eat do eat carbs, they are the "good kind" (no refined white anything for me). Yet none of this has really seemed to make a difference for me...That's why I was wondering if anyone had seen success on Met or anything else...
This is a question I would LOVE answered as well. I am about your size and ht. I went on metformin and went from like 130 to 108 in like a yr. But I still have it seems like 8 lbs in my lower belly. The belly was reduced, I am now a size 2 but it is not completely gone. I seem to have the best luck with affecting my belly while I lift weights in addition to yoga. Engaging your buttocks and hamstring muscles affects metabolism the best because of the large amount of mitochondria. I tried pilates but my belly is so flabby it was like a health hazard attempting to do the moves.
The funny thing is, I am happy with my figure, but you stil wont' catch me in a bathing suit. The distribution of fat is all belly and arms and back for me. I have no boobs so you can see the odd figure. I feel like when i finally make money, the only thing I can turn to is a tummy tuck because if I dont sit up straight my jeans feel like they will open open b/c of the 2 rolls that threaten to pop the top button open. IF i go up a jean size they fall of my butt....
