I'm 19 years old, and about half a month ago my doctor put me on metformin. Now, I don't have PCOS, and I don't suspect that I do, however, my doctor told me that my body produces too much insulin. I am trying to look for some kind of group or forum I can get support from, and this is the best I could find. If someone else could point me in another direction, or if this isn't accepted here, please let me know and I'll remove my post.
What happened is I went in for a doctor appointment because I've been having trouble losing weight. I'm vegan, and exercise regularly (taking walks in the evening). I had lost about ten pounds, but then had the hardest time sleeping, when I gained it back, I could sleep again. I told my doctor all this and she took blood telling me if everything was ok she would put me on some diet pills that would help me lose weight. Well, three days later I get a call and am told that I need to come in for another blood test because my insulin levels seemed kind of high (the first test I had breakfast in the morning, so they asked me to come in after an 8 hour fasting). I did so and again, three days later I get the call saying I have too much insulin in my body and will begin taking metformin to get it under control. Once the insulin isnt a problem, I can start this new diet problem. I've never had anything serious wrong with me, I was in shock.
So I was put on metformin, two 500mg a day in the evening. I've been having side effects, the usual like nausea and diarrhea.
I've had some strange changes too, though. I'm not one to get upset easily, but my emotions are on a roller coaster. The littlest thing sets me off and makes me so mad, so I'll go sulk in my room, and that gets my boyfriend upset. Then he apologizes and so do I, and I end up crying for the next hour. I have never had this problem before and it's affecting both of us. Is it possible that the metformin is reacting with my birth control? I am on seasonale, and my doctor knows about this.
My boyfriend's mom is diabetic and gave me some information, but kept saying I was pre-diabetic. The only thing my doctor said about that was that had this went untreated, I would have developed diabetes. Are these two the same thing?
I have an appointment in two and a half weeks, because my month's supply is about to end (I haven't made the appointment yet, but will soon). Hopefully, the doctor can help explain more in detail what the problem is and what I can do about it.
Until then, I was wondering if anyone might have any useful information for me, regarding my condition or my side effects. I'm just completely lost and still in shock. I have no idea what to expect.
Did you start on 500mg twice a day? I think most people only start on 500mg once a day, simply because of the side effects.
My emotions are crazy too when I dont eat regulary. I get really grumpy and snap at everyone and can even become irrational if I skip a couple of meals (which hasn't been too hard to do lately when I have our toddler staying with us!).
Perhaps reduce your dosage and watch what you're eating more carefully. Or if you're still not keen to be on Met, find another doctor and/or do another lot of bloodwork?
Pre-diabetic was also a term that was used when I was a teenager long before I was diagnosed. That and Chronic Fatigue and Glandular Fever, none of which were confirmed until a few doctors later. In that time I had put on a lot of weight and starting growing hairs where girlies shouldn't have that much hair! Grrrrr! lol

Are you sure that you don't have PCOS? It affects every woman differently, and many women have only a few of the "typical" symptoms. Could it be that you maybe have type 2 diabetes? Did you get AF regularly before BCP's?

You know what, now that I think about it, I think it is the irregularity of eating. I just hadnt realized it before, but now that you mention it, the times I dont eat regular enough are the times my emotions get crazy.

Well, I haven't done much research about it. I've read about it before, but I guess I can do more research about it. About the Type 2 Diabetes, would my doctor not have tested for it the second time my blood was taken, after she noticed the insulin levels were a little high? It just seems like a logical progression, but there might be something I'm missing. I guess I'll find out in two weeks.
Thank you both for your help and I'll definitly get more information from my doctor, and get more blood tests done. I do feel a little more comfortable now that I've talked to a few more people about it. Thanks again for all your help.
