I know that metformin can cause constipation so I was trying to figure out why. I also know metformin blocks b-12 in our system so I looked up the correlation between b-12 and constipation. One of the side effects of lack of b-12 is constipation along with loss of energy etc. Is this why the med causes those awful side effects or is it another property in the medication???
Inquiring mind!!
Thanks in advance!!!

PCOS for 21 years I am 35
Hirutism
Hypoglycemia
(Extreme Depression with suicidal ideation) Now lessened after my hysterectomy
Lived a life going to doctors that had no understanding of PCOS--which was mistakably called bi-polar, OCD, depression, hypomanic and more....
1 precious little girl
You could be right...I'm doing IR diet and eating lots of dairy and meat. I've got some Metamucil, but just forget to take it. I eat lots of apples and oatmeal, so should be getting enough fiber, but maybe not enough to counter the diary. I also think I should really drink lots more water.
I've only heard of metformin causing loose stool/diarrhea. Try eating more fruits. I am also doing the high protein/low carb diet. I swear to you I am eating everyday, 2 banannas, 2 apple, a large handful of grapes, and either a pear or a peach. Or you could use a stool softner (like D.O.S). I hope you feel better!

I get constipated too! I've only been taking Met for about 5 weeks now and I've NEVER gotten diarrhea. I do suffer from constipation. I've been taking metamucil and it seems to help. I also follow an IR diet with more protein. But I think I still get plenty of veggies and fruit. Try Metamucil. I take it twice a day. My doc says it fine.
Yes, Met can cause constipation in some of us--especially those with Irritable Bowl with constipation. Especially when you are avoiding carbs on a low carb diet. You may need a bit more carns to move things along so-to-speak. I took Met a few months last year and was VERY constipated and checked with my gastroenterologist who mentioned a small percentage of people have that reaction to met. I ended up quitting met (various reasons) and was better. Now I am on it again and am back to being constipated amolst immediately. I try and eat a bit of some type of complex carb (oatmeal etc..) and drink lots of water. Fiber supplements help but may make you bloat.
