Default metformin vs avandia

ok

heres my problem, ill try not to make it too long!

i concievd on my first cycle after 6 months on 1000mg of metformin, to me met was a wonder drug, i lost weight, facial hair seemed to diminish etc, i was more energetic..total excellence!!...i stopped taking it at 31 weeks, and delivered baby at 32 weeks......when ds was 6 months old, i resumed met, worked my way upto 1500mg, and also i was put on anti-depressants, the weight seemed to pile on, and i changed anti depressants, weight still went on, no af, in fact no change what so ever this time round, like there was last time...i have just seen my gp, and i am gonna come off my anti-d, to see if this makes a diference, if not she has suggested that i try avandia, she says i can also take avandia with met!!

thanks in advance for your replies, and for voting

I have't used both, so I can't vote in your poll...but since Anti-D's are the thing that changed, I would persue that angle first, especially since met worked for you before. Weight gain is a common side effect of many anti-depressants (One report linked cravings for carbs with Celexa, and other studies showed an average weight gain over time of 15-20 pounds with Zoloft, Prozac, and Celexa, so if you are on any of these, it may be the culprit). I know some Dr's will try Wellbutrin because it has lower incidence of weight gain or drowsiness, but your Dr will be able to tell you if it could work for your individual situation.

There is more info on anti-D's and weight gain here: http://www.netnutritionist.com/fa12.htm

All the best!

I didn't vote because I used both and they both have wonderful effects. I took Avandia for 8 months (with bcp's as I was scared of the possibilities of birth defects per my doctor) and felt incredible! I lost about 45 pounds. And the best part-I had no side effects!

I was switched to Glucophage for 3 months to conceive, which I did. That was the wonderful thing about Glucophage for me. I had the bad side effects like no body's business though.

I guess, for everyday reasons, I would choose Avandia over Glucophage, unless I am trying to conceive. I actually plan to get back on Avandia after my little one is born.
