Default Metformin vs. Glumetza

Hi. My doctor refuses to give me Met because he says it doesn't work as well as Glumetza. My insurance co-pay for the Glumetza is $50 but for Met it's $10.

Have y'all experienced any difference between name brand and generic? Before I throw a huge fit with him next week, I'd like to know a bit more about others experiences.

Thanks!

I've been on Glumetza (the slow-release metformin) for one week now. I asked my doc the same questions b/c generic is less than 1/2 the cost. She said she wouldn't prescribe gen. metformin since the cost is not worth potentially worse side effects. From what I've read online, generic metformin does cause more/stronger side effects of gas/nausea/diahrrea/stomach upset. Not to share tmi, but I have experienced more gas and looser stool on just 500mg/day, and would not want to have worse side effects than that. I think it was/is worth the extended release or 'brand name' drug for me. I increase my dose tonight, so will see how it goes in the next few days.

Smile Glumetza MUCH better than Met for me!

I was on Met for years. It didn't do much to help me...in fact, it did me a lot of harm! I had horrible diarhea nearly every day I took it. It caused me nausea a lot of the time and stomach pain.

3 months ago my endochrinologist put me on Glumetza and I haven't had a bit of a problem. In fact, my testosterone and insulin levels have both gone down!

For me, it's well worth it. If you have trouble affording Glumetza, tell your doc and ask if they can give you free samples. My endo is giving me samples while she fights my insurance company to cover it.

Good luck!

This is great. I have been struggling with taking Met. The side effects are horrid when you are trying to work. I may ask my dr. about this medication

Edaras update: I'm up to 1000mg/day Glumetza (XR, slow release) with no problems and gastric issues have subsided. Hooray!

Yeah, I've decided to bite the bullet and buy the name-brand. I am going to ask my doctor for some samples and explain that I am poor! =)

i've taken metformin, fortamet and now glumetza. i've only been on glumetza for a little over a month now, but my gastric issues have been WAY less than either of the others. my doctor even gave me a free trial bottle of glumetza and a coupon to use for $20 off at the pharmacy. yes, glumetza is higher in cost, but i think it's worth looking into/trying out.
good luck.
