Hey girls, I was just recently diagnosed with PCOS (about 6 weeks ago) My MD put me back on BC pill, and after some persuasion she finally put me on metformin. I started last week with a half of 500mg and then this week I started taking 1 full pill.
My question is how soon can I expect to see results in regards to weight loss? I've been working out with a personal trainer for about a year now and have only lost 14 pounds (which convinced me something was wrong). I'm getting married in 4 months and will continue my diet and exercise regime but I need a time line as to when I can expect to see results for all my hard work. I have about 24 pounds to go to reach my goal weight.
I lost 10-15 lbs in the first month I was on Met. I find that I only lose weight on Met if I stick to a low carb diet. It also depends on how overweight you are. I have a ton of weight to lose and found at the beginning it was easy, then slowed down over time.
If you are exercising, I would examine your diet, met seems particularly effective with a low carb diet.

To be honest, I think the reason I lost weight on Met, was because of the "lack of appetite" symptom. I only ate when I was really really hungry, and I lost weight quickly. When that side affect goes away, my weight loss slows down or stablizes.

i have just started taking glucophage (metformin) and i am experincing TERRIBLE side effects! i feel so sick! i know this is common but when does it go away! i have lost 3 lbs in 1 1/2 days b/c of it!
For me, the really bad side effects lasted about a week, and some milder side effects (leg cramps and some fatigue) went on into the second week but were all gone after that.
Hang in there, it really is worth it all once you get past that point.

i just hope this works! i was diagnosed with PCOS in March. i have had 4 surgeries in less than 2 yrs including having my left tube and ovary removed last year and i'm only 23! i have been on EVERY drug known to man and nothin has worked! has it worked for anyone else?!
I've only been on Metformin for 8 days now, the side effects are slowly getting better, but still have some major fatigue. I weighed myself this morning and am down ten pounds from when I was in the doctors office 8 days ago. That also is probably because I have to run to the bathroom every 15 minutes...but hey, I'm willing to do just about anything to get myself healthy at this point.
Hey Ladies - I've been on Glucophage for a while now and I had to play around with the medication to stop feeling sick all the time. First off I was put on Glucophage XR. I was constantly sick most days of the week and spent my time either in the bathroom or feeling like I had better make my way to the bathroom. Needless to say I was miserable and I went in search of a solution. I found this wonderful site and I found some posts of women who found that they were also feeling sick on Glucophage XR. After doing some reading, I went back to my doctor and asked if I could try the 2x daily regular Glucophage. I must say, within 1 week my stomach had calmed down a whole lot. I, like many of the women who've posted, found that a low-carb diet works the best with the meds and weight loss. Also drinking a glass of milk when I take the meds helps a lot with the upset stomach side effect, at least for me.
I also discovered, quite by accident, that I can't take the generic drug metformin and need to have the name brand Glucophage. I switched pharmacies at one point and the next time my prescription was filled, they gave me metformin. Within 1 month, I had broken out with bad acne and I had gained 10 lbs! It was awful. With the glucophage, I was seeing my weight slowly coming off but the metformin made me totally backslide. I immediately had the pharmacy switch me back and the acne cleared up and the weight started coming off.
I've lost about 20lbs but I will admit, I haven't been working out like I need to. The good news is, I haven't gained any weight either which prior to Glucophage, I gained weight every year.
I hope this info helps and I can say you've definitely come to the right place. I can't tell you how many times this site and the member's posts have helped me.
