I realise that Metformin will not help you lose weight without following a healthy eating plan but I was wondering if good weight losses are still possible without exercise. I have just started taking Metformin and do eat healthily 90% of the time, although you wouldn't think so as I am still obese. I am currently looking at making sure I eat even more low GI foods to help me further but I find exercise virtually impossible due to having a severe knee problem caused by sceptic arthritus as a child.
Has anybody lost a lot of weight just through a low GI diet and Metformin or do I need to attempt exercise, even though it can damage my knee further and put me in unbearable pain in the process?
I just started taking again on Nov 12. As of today I have lost 10.5 pounds. I'm only on 500mg daily. and while I work my tail off at work and get a lot of exersice there I'm doing the same amount of work that I have since I started working there 3 1/2 years ago. I'm planning on starting an excersize regimate but haven't yet had the chance to start. I watch what I eat keep the carbs low and make sure to not over eat. But this is something I've been doing for almost 2 years now and while it helped me lose 10 pounds in 6 months when I started I haven't seen any significant weight loss until the gluc.

Not all exercise requires you to put stress on your knee.
Have you talked to your doctor about getting a referral to a physical therapist. A therapist might be able to help you rehab your knee, and show you ways to modify exercises for your particular set of physical circumstances.
I wouldn't count on any long term weight loss success without increased physical activity - met or no met.

Hello. I have lost about 7 or 8 lbs since i have been on Met and it has only been 3 weeks for me. I have been trying to eat less carbs and more lean protein and veggies. I haven't been excercising but have been trying to walk my dog about 30 mins a day. I am not really over weight but it has been very difficult for me to loose 2 lbs not to mention 7 or 8. I am happy so far. I would try and be as active as possible.

Thanx everyone 4 ur stories so far...much appreciated. The comment about not all exercise puts stress on your knee...hmmm, can you think of one? I'm not lazy and I have tried several different types, walking, swimming, step aerobics, cycling...all cause immense pain I'm afraid. It's very frustrating as I do enjoy exercise - swimming and cycling being two favourites but it is just so painful and I can't sleep due to aches and pains after taking part.
Thanx, but am still confused as to how you can exercise whilst on a chair. What part of the body would it work out? What kind of exercises? I guess I tend to think of exercise in a more cardio vascular way.
In reference to what you said about seeing a doctor about my knee, well I've tried and as it is arthritic there is very little they can do. I basically have a crumbling knee joint and there is little that can be done to fix it.

Seated exercises can be both strength training and cardio. Again, a physical therapist can offer TONS of suggestions in this area.
There are 10's of thousands of people paralyzed from the waist down and in wheelchairs who manage to obtain and maintain fitness...so it can done.

They may not be able to 'fix' it, but REHAB can be done. You should talk to your doctor about getting a referral to a physical therapist so a program can be designed to work around your physical limitations.

I might suggest to ask for a PT or an OT either of them could assist with helping your daily routine to add more exercise in that would not bother you as much as doing a gym routine.
When I started taking Met, I lost maybe 5 lbs in 2 months, but I lost more inches..I didn't do any measuring, but I know my boobs got smaller(from a 40E to a 38D), and my waist as well...at least one size..and that was w/ just my regular daily activity.

I actually lost like 30 pounds by sitting on my butt all day while i was on met..but exersize is good..it will help you lose more weight
Exercise shouldn't just be about 'losing weight'.
If you're serious about improving your PCOS symptoms you'll exercise.
Regular exercise - even without lots of initial weight loss - improves many body functions (including lean mass, which makes your body run better and makes it smaller.)
Even if you lose 'scale' weight, if you haven't worked on the visceral fat (the fat in your belly around your organs), you haven't reduced the major risks of heart attack and diabetes.

Thanx again everybody for your posts. I must re iterate again that I am not against exercise or trying to make excuses why I can't do it as I long to be able to swim or cycle again. I am on my feet/walking round all day at work and I do walk a lot outside of work, despite the pain. I'm hoping this will be enough along with the diet to help me lose some weight and also keep me healthy as I do realise exercise is not just for weight loss but also about maintaining and looking after your body.

There are a lot of weight lifting exercises you can do while sitting, even ones for your legs! Strength training is great, will help you lose weight, and is often better for women with PCOS than cardio. If you increase the amount of muscle in your body you'll burn more calories even when you're doing nothing!
