Unhappy Metformin XR and reactions to fish and shellfish

Hi ALL!!

I'm new to the forums and have a problem that I think either began when I was uppped to 1500mg a day or more profoundly since going to the XR. Back in the spring I noticed that I am having the explosive diarrhea after I eat fish or shellfish. I first thought it was having fried fish and shellfish but now it's any kind of fish or shellfish. Last week I had broiled shrimp and within a half hour I had to RUN to a public bathroom. Two nights ago I had broiled salmon and was home but it went right through as well. It's been bad where I haven't made it to the bathroom (but no public humiliation-thank goodness). I also thought it was because of drinking beer but it happens with or without drinking beer. Has anyone else experienced gas and diarrhea with fish and shellfish? It really saddens me because I am eating healthier and I don't eat red meat or pork.

Thanks,

gg

Heyyy! This started happening to me before I started on the Met and continues now, except it is only shellfish, not regular fish. I have been baffled by it. If also happened everytime at the particular restaurant(Snuffers) in college when I ate the french fries with bacon and cheese or something, also a buttery pasta dish with artichokes from Macaroni Grill. I started avoiding those dishes and all shellfish. I later was dxed with pcos and Met and the problem seemed to get worse and more things were added to the list(lettuce), although I am able to digest lettuce better now.

I know this doesn't make much sense, but I wanted to let you know that you are not alone. Everyday, I feel like the meds I have to take are picking the lesser of two evils. Would I rather have the symptoms of PCOS and risk diabetes, heart disease, etc., or would I rather take the meds and feel like crud and deal with the side effects?

Hang in there.

Default WOW Thanks Moonshoot

HEY there back!!!!

I was so thinking this is crazy and then as I added it all up it came down to the fish and shellfish. I'm almost scared to eat sometimes which is a blessing in disguise because I do have over 100 lbs to lose and am trying to get my ovulation going in order to have at least 1 baby before it's all over.

Thanks so much for writing back as I know I'm not going crazy and I'm not the only one (although I'm sorry others have it too). I'm like you, it's better to have those side effects than the diabetes and worse and if I keep eating better and exercising maybe I can get off of all my other meds too.

Good luck to you Moonshoot and I'll see you out here on the boards.

Well we're having shrimp for dinner, so I guess I'll find out if I have any sort of reaction! I sure hope not!

ETA: I'm on regular Met though... but still, we shall see!

Hi boxergurl,

It wasn't happening as much on the regular and it only started out with the fried fish. Now I wish I had made a better journal of this.

Good luck and yum yum.

Well I didn't have any issues with the shrimp. That's such a bummer that its causing such issues for you. I love seafood, so I'd be upset if I had such an icky reaction. I hope it gets better for you!

Yeah it's definitely fish and seafood because I had a big ole greasy bacon burger and fries last nite and that of course stayed in. I don't really even eat beef but just had a craving. Oh well, maybe it will correct itself when my hormones and insulin line up with the moons.

good luck out there
