Default Methotrexate or D&C?

I just found out yesterday my baby's gone-I was 10 1/2 weeks pg and the baby was only measuring 6w5d, no h/b. I've only had light bleeding and some cramping. My doctor wants to either give me the medication or do a D&C since it probably won't happen by itself or it'll take a super long time.

So I'm wondering, which is better? I'm kinda scared to have surgery but I've also heard that you can get really wicked cramps from the pills. And how long does it take for the medications to work? I don't have to go back to work till next Tuesday but I don't want to take more time off work b/c I'm still bleeding and cramping...suggestions?

Gothgirl - I am so sorry for your loss! ((HUGS)) I have not had the shot, but did have a D&E for 14wk twins. The surgery was not that bad. I had a general anethesia, so was asleep the whole time. When I woke up, I was actually more sore from the shoulders up, due to the breathing tube. My waist down bits hardly hurt at all, like perhaps very light cramping similar to faint PMS cramps. I know there are some other ladies in this forum that have had both and can give you a perspective on both methods. Again, so sorry for your loss!

Carrie - I'm so sorry for your loss. There are no words to make you feel better, but know you've found a place with women who truly understand what you are going through.

Whether to do the shots or a D&C is a very personal choice. At my doctor's recommendation, I opted for the D&C. He recommended the D&C for several reasons - you can test "the tissue" which may give some answers as to why the m/c occurred, you don't have to worry when the m/c will happen and where you'll be or how bad the cramps will be, also, some women who m/c naturally end up having a D&C anyway b/c they start to hemmorhage or sometimes it all doesn't "come out"

Personally, I just wanted it over with. The idea of having to continue to carry my dead baby was just way too hearbreaking on top of accepting that the baby died at all. Also, I had been bleeding for days and the smell was truly awful (I swore it smelled like death). I couldn't deal with the idea of waiting for "it" to happen and not knowing when, where or how bad it would be plus I was terrified of what I would see... I also wanted to be able to get back to TTC as soon as I could (Dr wants me to wait 2 full cycles) For me, D&C was the right choice and I'm very glad that I made that decision, but again it's a very personal choice.

I'm so sorry for you loss! We understand how you feel.

I just had my D & C on wed and it was fast, and easy and I felt much better afterwards. For me there was something unsettling about carrying around a non living baby. I just didn't like the idea. I was also developing a fever an sickness.

I didn't have any pain with the D & C. I took tylenol once the day of the procedure and nothing after that. Never got a single cramp from it and the day I had it done went out to eat.

I chose it just cause it was fast and I wanted it all over with , I figured the sooner this is over the sooner I can try again. (I debated natural miscarriage or D & C) from start to finish I was in there for an hour 20 mins or so, that included prep surgery and recovery. I think its the better way to go but its just my opinion and you have to do whats right for you. Good luck with your decision

Well I ended up with a D&C. Monday morning I started having heavy bleeding and really bad cramps, Vicodin wasn't helping at all. Then I got really dizzy and light headed so we went to the ER again, I was throwing up and completely miserable. They got me into the OR right away and the D&C went fine. Physically I'm fine now. I think I would've had that done anyway, b/c it was killing me to know I'd been carrying a dead baby for the last month and I wanted it to be done. I just feel so completely lost now...I have to tell my mom yet and IDK how I'll even do it.

I'm glad your okay, the same thing happen to me. I was becoming sick and the day of I had a fever and felt so sick. I have that lost feeling too. I feel lost and confused and angry about the whole situation and impatient that I now have to wait to ttc again.
I sometimes still think I'm pregnant cause I still feel pregnant. I miss the feeling of it oddly enough even though most of my pregnancy was pain and bleeding and worry. I dunno when if ever that lost feeling goes away but I hope it does for you.

I'm not sure if that's the same drug they gave me or not, my m/c started itself but "it" wasn't all coming out & I was bleeding badly. I was offered a D&C or a drug to make my uterus contract. I chose the drug because at that point I had been awake for over 24hrs my panic attacks were kicking my butt, I did not think I would be okay emotionally with waking up after the procedure in the hospital. I started the meds and was kept over night (it was 6yrs ago so I can't remember exactly how much pain I was in but I slept so it couldn't have been alot KWIM?) & monitored half the next day.
I had to continue taking the pills for the next 2wks and because my luck sucks the instant I took the last pill my bleeding got heavy again & I was in the hospital again for fluids. I took another week of the pills and was physically fine.
I can't remember the name of the pills but I do remember them telling me if I came in contact with any alcohol (deodorant, perfume, vanilla, etc) that it could be fatal to me.
