I was wondering if anyone knew much about MicroAlbumin or Albumin Creatine. I just got my results from some labs I had run and I am fairly concerend . I know that they both have to do with kidney function , And my Fertility Specialist didnt seem to concerned , but I have yet to go over the results with my Endo. And well my endo is the finally say to proceeding with treatments... anyways sorry to ramble but here are my results ( these are Canadian )
Microalbumin 42.0 Result ( 0 - 20 mg/L ) reference
Albumin Creatine 4.5 Result ( 0.0 - 2.8 mg/mmol ) reference
I am really scared because these seem really high compared to the margin given of being healthy.
Thank you so very much
Shelly

Hey there, I'm fairly new to diabetes and my doc didn't do the urine test right away so she just ordered it and I did it today and I haven't gotten my results yet but thought I'd share what I just looked up on the subject. Microalbumin checks for protein leaking from kidneys...
Here is something I found at labcorp.com:
Use
Measurement of albumin levels in urine below the detection level of urine dipsticks. This test is useful in the management of patients with relatively early diabetes mellitus to assist in avoiding or delaying the onset of diabetic renal disease.
Limitations
Because of the inherent day-to-day variability of albumin excretion into the urine, ***two of three microalbumin levels measured within a 3- to 6-month period should be abnormal before a considering a patient to have crossed a diagnostic threshold**.1 Physical exercise during the previous 24 hours and during the period of collection can cause a transient elevation in microalbumin. Other variables, including infection, fever, congestive heart failure, marked hyperglycemia, and marked hypertension can result in increased microalbumin levels
** So they are saying even if one is high, it may not be indicative of anything wrong, but you should definitely talk to your ENDO about it!!
And the rest of the info from that page:
Albumin accounts for approximately 50% of the protein in plasma.2 The kidney works to prevent the loss of albumin into the urine through active resorbtion, but a small amount of albumin can be measured in urine of individuals with normal renal function. Microalbumin is the term ascribed to the measurement of albumin in urine at concentrations below the sensitivity of dipstick tests for total protein. Microalbuminuria (ie, urine albumin levels above the reference range and below the level of clinical albuminuria) is a important indicator of deteriorating renal function.
The prognostic value of consistently elevated microalbumin levels is particularly well established in diabetic patients.1 Renal disease is a common microvascular complication of diabetes. Without specific interventions, 80% of type I diabetics with repeatedly elevated microalbumin levels will go on to end-stage renal disease. Twenty percent to 40% of type II diabetics with sustained microalbuminuria will progress to overt nephropathy.
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that routine urinalysis should be performed annually on adults with diabetes.1 If the urinalysis is negative for protein, microalbumin measurement is recommended. The ADA also recommends annual screening of children beginning at puberty or after 5 years disease duration. The reference intervals stated above reflect the diagnostic criteria prescribed by the ADA.1
I hope that helps some, it explained it to me a little better too. So hopefully you can work w/ your doc to lower the amount of protein so you won't end up w/ kidney damage. I hope my test comes out ok too, I'll come back and let you know..
So I'm getting conflicting feelings from these... now I am worried. In the past, before I even had diabetes, I used to test w/ those strips at the docs office I worked at and I had protein in my urine then (a small amt) oh geez, I hope I'm not on a road to dialysis. I don't wanna do that!!
Shelly, I just want to add that your doc will most likely want to switch you to a different IR med than Met. Met is cleared through the kidneys, and kidney function has to be normal in order to be on Met. Here is the warning given on prescribing info for Met:
WARNING: A small number of people who have taken GLUCOPHAGE have developed a serious condition called lactic acidosis. Properly functioning kidneys are needed to help prevent lactic acidosis. Most people with kidney problems should not take Glucophage.

Met 2000mg since 2001, started Glucophage XR 4/22/04, then switched to Met ER 6/04; also: multi, Vit. C, Vit. E, B12/folic acid combo, fish oil & borage oil combo, garlic capsules, cinnamon, Vitex, calcium with magnesium/zinc, biotin, CoQ10, selenium, iron
Other meds: Verapamil and Altace(for blood pressure)
Started laser hair removal 7/29/03, completed 3/04 (it works!)
UAE for fibroid 3/24/03 and 3/16/04
Thank you both for the replies . I have talked to my Endo and she didnt seem too concerned with those numbers at this moment since I was menstrauting at the time , and her and I both believe those high numbers where due to that fact. She said we will just check again in a few months.
I just have been so sick for most of my adult life and well the last 5 years have been the best health I have been in ( yes that includes all this I have now hehe ) so every little thing has me in a panic. My Endo said to just not worry about it and My Fertility Specialist said that as well!!
Thank you both so very much
Shelly

That is ironic about the menstrual period... because my urine was taken Friday at the end of my period and I specifically asked the doctor AND the lab tech and both said that will NOT affect the test. So I would hope your doc is just saying that in general because she is not worried (because remember they go off of two or three tests before they determine kidney issues unless they have you do the 24 hour urine test).
