Default Midwife Apoointment disappointing!

Says it all really.

Got blood pressure taken and thats it! Told even if things are wrong nothing can be done so they just see me to keep in contact.

hi

oh. What a disappointment. Could you see a different midwife instead? Hope you can get it sorted out soon

Sad thing is that what she says is true. They won't do anything if things are going wrong because there's nothing they can do. Unfortunately. But.....my midwife DID check the heartbeat last week - at 16 weeks! It took her a while to find it, but they do it as standard.

My blood pressure was very high so I'm going back again this Friday to be checked again and they'll check the heartbeat then too...

Seems strange that they didn't check it but they do things so differently in different areas.

seems to be a common trend in most parts of the country, my sister was in Manchester for her first trimester and back home in Ireland the rest and found nobody was particularly interested in either place.

She didn't get her first scan til 18wks and she had to fight for that. She was particularly worried as she had a heart condition as a baby.

Hope all is well with you and babe otherwise

Its so annoying they dont check for heartbeats until 26 weeks, that is late! Round here, they do it at about 16 weeks.

When I was about 12 weeks I managed to persuade the dr to listen in and find the heartbeat (which she did, no problems) and then when I was there a week later I asked if she could find it again. So she tried to find it, but there was no heartbeat. Cue major panic. We were sent to hospital with a letter to hand in saying "possible missed miscarriage". I was beside myself. Anyway, in the hospital they were much more experienced at finding heartbeats and found it within seconds and luckily all was ok. But I guess it is for reasons like that they try and put off finding the heartbeat for as long as possible.

Good luck for your scan, it is scary beforehand but Im sure you will be fine! Cant wait to see the pics!

I can't remember them ever bothering with a heartbeat til my babies were almost due for delivery and that's in 2 different Health Authorities! I do know they're elusive anyway, depends on baby's position, how much water, etc etc and as the baby will move constantly until the last part of your pregnancy when s/he gets jammed in there, it's probably not an essential thing to check for, really, given the fact they're chasing a small thing literally swimming around!

Cazza, I suppose the best way to look at it is no news is good news. That's the bottom line with babies, eh?

Sorry you were disappointed with your appointment Hope the next one is better.

I had similar troubles during my PG. I expressed concerns over my PCOS and higher rates of problems and they told me there's nothing they can do about it now, I was pregnant and should be thankful, so not to worry. Not really what you want to hear

Don't think I heard the heartbeat until after 26 weeks either, after that they did it everytime I went but this was when I could get an appointment - I didn't see a midwife from 36 weeks to 42 weeks. Real useful!!

When I was in labour, the maternity unit at our hospital was shut too and they were redirecting women in labour to a hospital 40 mins away....

Shambles.
