Default Migraines

Could you describe what they feel like to you? How often do you get a migraine? What do you do to help get rid of the migraine?

Default Here is what my migrains were like...

The first sign of a migrain coming on for me was loosing my sight. I would only beable to see using my peripheral vision. The straight forward sight was gone. Also everything had an aura to it. At this time my head did not hurt, but it was a sign it was coming. About an hour later the migrain came. Light hurt my head and noises--forget it. I would take my medicine when the sight would start going then I would have to go sleep the migrain away. I no longer get migrains, but maybe once a year. Ever since I had my kids they have gone away

Do you think you get them?

Well, currently I am having a horrible time with my head... Constant headache for about 3 months (I think I have had one headache free day), and 5-6 migraines a week.

I have lived with migraines since I was 9, and 7 neurologists and several doctors and tests later... Well, no one can figure out what is wrong with me. I think they are hormonal, and somehow related to the PCOS.

Mine vary... When the migraine gets REALLY bad, it is localized on the left side of my head, and radiates through my jaw. My teeth get SUPER sensitive. I feel throbbing, and my eyes feel like they are going to pop out. My vision and hearing are very sensitive as well. Loud noises and bright lights definitely exacerbate my migraines. They end up radiating down into my neck too, like a tension headache.

The only thing I have found that tends to help a little is a hot shower. I get non-constrictive migraines, meaning that my veins constrict when I have them, they don't dilate. So, all of the constrictive medicine makes me feel like I am going to have a heart attack. I have tried about 30 migraine medications, from preventatives to medications you take at the onset of migraine, to no avail. In college, I became addicted to tylenol (24 extra strength capsules a day), to try to slow them down. Went on an elimination diet... Tried chiropractors, orthodontics, naturopathic doctors, you name it.

How frequently do you get migraines? Have you sought help? There are some great resources out there.

I feel like mine are more hormonal? I get headaches on the left side of my head around the time I'm ovulating and right before AF arrives. At first I thought I was having strokes, because I get a numbing on the left side of my face sometimes. My first sign is seeing little black dots in my eyes. I guess I'm so used to them that I don't even get nauseous anymore. I take Excedrin Migraine for them.

Cool black spots, sensitivity to light

MIne usually starts with the black spots where I can't see everything clearly. Take meds right when this happens and sometimes you can stop it. You will need to lay down in a dark room and that seems to help. Mention it to your doc and he/she may have some sample meds for migraines that will help you.

Have you been doing without sleep lately or changed you sleep habits? I was working 3rd shift for awhile and that's when I first starting getting migraines. Don't know if my sleeping change had anything to do with it or not.

sorry for having to go through these

My migraines, for the most part, start with a horrible stabbing feeling behind my right eye. Which this I experience sensitivity to light as well as an increase in the pain if I move my eyes around instead of my whole head.. If I don't take medication right away, it spreads to become a constant stabbing pain only on the right side of my head. I do, on occassion, get them on the left side but it is much more rare.

I've had them with the aura and without. With the aura, I get the black spots in my vision. I almost prefer those because I can take something right away to head off the worst of the pain. I also get the kind where I have the sharp stabbing pain behind one eye. Mine is usually over my left eye. My triggers are hormonal (I always get one the first 2 days of my period), low pressure fronts (the bigger it is, the worse the headache), and directly after I've gone through a really stressful time (I think I'm on the downside and wham! comes the migraine). I now take amitriptyline as a preventative & prescription naproxen for the actual headache. Since I began the amitriptyline, I have had less migraines, and the ones I do have are more manageable.

Do any of you experience numbness? Now I'm getting nervous that I'm having more than migraines!

Yes numbness is a common symptom. Please don't worry. They are scary when you first get them...

Good luck and feel better!

They are usually behind my left eye. They throb & I'm sensitive to light. Each step feels like a giant walking through making the floor almost pound in my head. It's best for me to lay down in a dark, quiet room, but that is hard to do w/ my DD. I don't get them as much since I have stopped taking BCP's. I may get them around AF. I'd say I've probably had 2 in the past 4 mths. I usually take Excedrin or someone told me to take 2 Tylenol w/ a caffeinated, can drink & sip it w/ a straw as quick as I can. It may sound weird but it usually works.

Oh I forgot to add I've had a prescription for Imitrex & it made me sick, but I've had a prescription for Midrin (I think that's what it's called) & it worked well.

I get a weird nausea--not like I have to throw up, but just a sicky-feeling--followed by dizziness and then tightness and throbbing at my temples. Fun, huh. I take Imitrex on the spot & it usually works w/in an hour, thank goodness. Zomig works pretty well for me too, but has a shorter half-life. I am now on Topamax for prevention, & I've gone from 15-18 migraines a month to 8-10. An improvement, I guess, but still quite a interference in my life.

Occasionally I will have other symptoms such as extreme light/sound sensitivity (it always--when my head hurts--feels better to be in the dark & quiet, but sometimes I just can't stand anything else, KWIM?), numbness on one side of my head, floaters, vomiting, etc.

I hope you get to feeling better soon & that you find a tx that works for you!!!
