Question Milk Thistle & Ovulation

Has anyone taken milk thistle? Did it change when you ovulate?

I thought I'd take some this month, but didn't ovulate when I normally would (CD16-18). I did a bit of reading online yesterday about its possible anti-estrogenic qualities so went off it. I hope I haven't messed up my cycle too much!

Yes, it did throw off ovulation for me one month. It helps with so many issues (including depression), but I don't take it for that reason anymore. You could try taking it during AF. That most likely won't hurt anything, since estrogen goes down once AF starts.

Thanks for your reply, NYER! Since going off it, I started to see CM (finally!), and today might've had the tell-tale low temp saying that I'm ovulating right now (this is my 4th day off it now). I don't mind being shifted by a few days, so long as I do actually ovulate sometime soon.

I'm glad I wasn't taking 1001 other things, so I was able to pinpoint the possible cause of the delay and research it online. I wonder if it can be taken like soy or with soy, to help boost its effects.

Great idea to take it during AF!

I was thinking the same thing. It might. Sort of like helping the body get down to a better baseline estrogen level would with suppression meds. I would just take a low dose though. I've gotten some pretty bad headaches from milk thistle (probably from estrogen coming down too fast)!

That's interesting! I actually had headaches on the first two days I came off it-- I figured it was from my estrogen going up too fast. lol

I'm kind of leaning towards doing an alternative therapies cycle in May/June, so maybe I will think of working this into it somehow, like at the start of the cycle as you mentioned.

NYER, great news!

I finally got a nice, high BBT temp today to confirm that I O'ed 2 days ago*. Hooray!!

So yeah, for anyone else reading this, a word of caution: This cycle, I took milk thistle, thinking it would boost my liver health. I didn't realize that it has phytoestrogenic properties, like soy and red clover do, as well as the ability to clear excess estrogen from your system. As a result, I threw my cycle off kilter so that my O was late by 7 or 8 days. Luckily, all's well that ends well, but I just wanted to let all of you know to really, REALLY research everything that you decide to take, because you never know what might affect you in ways you weren't thinking.

*yesterday's temp was only half-way there.

Good for you Franca!

Another alterntative to milk thistle is lemon in water (liver congestion) and celery (kidney/liver/spleen). I've been doing a gout cleanse, and I can attest that they both work.

Best wishes!
