Anyone have experience with the Mini-pill? I'm thinking of the mini-pill (Progesterone only) for both birth control and help with PCOS symptoms. I have read that the mini-pill is safe while breastfeeding, and that it can have less side effects then the combo pill..I had a horrible time with the ortho-tri-cycln.
Any comments?

The minipill may be ok for breastfeeding (though I believe it can affect the supply of some people, it is considered better than combo pills). However I personally wouldn't recommend it once you are done breastfeeding for controlling PCOS symptoms or birth control. I have been on the mini-pill for just over a year now, after having been on combo pills since I was 18 (except for when I was TTC and pregnant). My blood pressure went up a little and my gyn wanted me off the estrogen, so I decided to try the minipill.
Well, I gained 18 lbs on the minipill in the first 6-9 months, and only after did my gyn tell me weight gain is commmon with the progesterone only pill. Plus you have to be MUCH more careful about how you take it for birth control. You have to take it within 3 hours or so of the same time every day. Even if you take it a few hours late you will need to use backup birth control for the next 48 hours. Also don't feel it is doing anything to control my PCOS sympotoms (though it isn't making them worse either, except for maybe the skin tags). I don't know about less side effects - I never had any when on the combo pills. I do find I cramp more during my period than on the combo pills. This is just my experience, so obviously YMMV.
Weight gain and irregular periods are common side effects of the mini-pill or any progestin-only birth control (depo, Mirena, old Norplant). The minipill also does not stop ovulation in over half the women who use it--it may only change the uterine lining & cervical mucuous to make things less likely.
But I agree--OrthoTriCyclen sucks and it's generally not the greatest for PCOS--the unopposed weeks of estrogen really does a number on us. True for any triphasic pills actually. I know you can't use it while BF, but have you tried any of the lower-estrogen combo drugs? Like Mircette, new YAZ (whose progestin has not been known to worsen IR for a change), the Ring? They might be less prone to raise your blood pressure--they half almost half the estrogen of earlier pills, and the ring has the lowest blood-floating-around value of estrogen absorbed.
