Default mirena or bcp?

Ladies, Please help me make up my mind... I am soooo wishy-washy! I just had a baby on 6/3, my dr suggested mirena-but like many others I googled it and read about all of the horrible side effects. I also read about the progesten (sp?) only pill which would be good for me because my family has a huge histroy of blood clots and I can not take regular BCP's anymore. However - I also read that the POP (minipill) causes facial hair, and acne ---- like I need any more of that?!?!

Could someone please give me some advice on this... I dont know what to do?!?

I cannot tell you what to choose. That is your decision for what is best for you. I can only tell you my experience with both. I have been on a bcp on and off over the past 17 years (oh gosh that is a long time) but the past 8 I have been using nothing. Not ttc or ttc was not really on our minds. If it happened it happened. But nothing happened. In that time in those early of the 8 years I started noticing the effects of pcos (wasn't diagnosed 'til Feb. of this year). Upon that the doc and I decided to try a few bcp's to control my issues (2 cycles a month every month lasting about 7-9 days each). Finally found one BUT it had a lot of estrogen so we decided against using it long term. Instead we are using the mirena. I have had it in place for about one month so far. So far it has been the right decision for me. For my whole mirena experience just look in this section under Mirena (my experience so far) thread. Each woman has her diferent experiences just as each woman is different. It is said that when people are unhappy with something they are more apt to tell someone but when they are happy with something they don't say it as much. I am trying to be the rare case who tells the good with the bad. I hope this helps you some.

I had been on the pill for over 10 years then it's affect started to take a toll on my body- bp going up, blod clot scare, not to mention the realization that I was getting anxiety and moodiness that only seemed to be getting worse... so going the pill after DD was not an attractive option.

I looked into Mirena and was gung ho till I googled it and freaked out. Unfortunately, I waited till the night before insertion to really read up on it and I was really skeptical and apprehensive... I kept my appt and told the receptionist about my apprehension... she said well I have one, and so does she, and her, and she does too... So many of the staff had one and all reported no probs whatsoever! I felt a lot better. Once in the examining room, I spoke with the midwife in depth and she even told me she had one and had no complaints. She also told me if I get it and hate it, she'll take it out when I come in for my check in a month.

So at that point my gut told me to do it. Insertion was no biggie for me (tho I've read of women having very difficult times with insertion). I had some major cramping on and off the days to follow but nothing worse than a bad period. I spotted only for a few days, and now I am pretty sure I am having my period and it super light and painless!

I do not regret it at all... at least not right now. Many of the problems that I remember reading about were things that came up months after having it inserted. I've had mine for 4 weeks now and I have no regrets or problems.

Good luck in making your decision. I know how difficult it could be.

well, i cant take bpc at all, makes my weight /blood pressure go wayyyy up.

I had a mirena for 4 years - i really liked it, but then it ran out. So i had a 2nd one - which i only had for 6 months, and had it removed after 6 months. made me have the most horrible back ache. But when i had it removed i was told that it had slipped, and that was the problem.

sorry to confuse you even more.

I'm sure you have made up your mind by now, but please keep in mind that when something is going good, not too many people with say anything. It is only when people have bad experiences do they feel like they have to share. So, don't let the bad experiences you've read about worry you. Know that for everyone with a bad experience writing there is at least one person with a good experience who doesn't bother giving it a good review. Isn't that the way of the world? We only complain and tell others about bad things, but it's word of mouth for the good things.

I myself had Mirena for a year, but even though it wasn't supposed to affect your system I am pretty positive it did. I loved having it though! I am just super sensitive to artificial hormones. So, now, even though it scares me at times, my boyfriend is taking care of the BC. Glad to know though he knows how important it is!
