Default Mirena (hormonal IUD)

I'm considering switching to Mirena, the IUD that releases progesterone and was wondering if anyone has or is currently using this? I'm especially interesting in hearing the experiences of women who have not had a child, since it sounds like that may effect your experience.

thanks

Smile Mirena (hormonal IUD)

Hi Bethann,

It will be 2 years next month since I've had my Mirena. I have both PCOS and Endomitriosis but did not want to go on the pill anymore. The fitting was a bit of a shock for me, I didnt expect that much pain. Although I bled for a month and a half afterwards, it has been absolutely fantastic ever since. I would strongly recommend to anyone, even if like me you dont have children. The only thing i would change next time is to ask for an anaesthetic next time I have one fitted. I like because the release of the necessary hormones are localised (well, that's my understanding anyway), rather than swimming in your blood stream and wreaking all kinds of havoc.
Let us know what you decide.

hi

Yes, I was told as well that the hormones stay just in the womb, and dont go everywhere like a 'pill' hormones would

My OB/GYN said the Mirena is better for women with PCOS because the hormones in it keep your uteran lining from building up too much. The excess uteran lining build-up in PCOS women is what increases our risk of Endometrial cancer.

I had mine inserted today and it hurt like hell.

Remeber bleeding/spotting is NORMAL the first 6-8 weeks you have the Mirena in.

The copper IUD is good if you are a cyster who regularly gets your period. Otherwise, my very PCOS wise OB/GYN said to go with Mirena.

Thanks, I'm looking for a GYN to insert it, my GP thought it was a great idea but rarely inserts it so she recommended a couple GYN's to actually put it in. I do think, particularly since I haven't had kids, I'm going to request some type of pain medicine when I have it inserted.

I'd say get the copper-T...Mirena releases progestIN, not progesterone the natural hormone. There is another IUD that does release the real deal, but it has to be replaced once a year.

I've had my Mirena almost a year. Spotted like mad when I first got it but have gone back to my normal 2 AFs a year now!(lol!) Last one lasted for 2 weeks but I think that's more to do with moving house than anything else.... I am really happy with it - my symptoms are unchanged whereas on BCPs I was a nightmare.

I have heard of IUDs but never given them much thought. Does it help with most of the PCOS symtoms? Is having a period common? I know it may sound crazy but I want to have a period. Its a normal thing for a woman and I think if I had normal periods every month I would feel more like a woman. Everyone thinks I am crazy for saying that but I just feel that way.

Hmm, well, you might want to get the nonhormonal IUD then, the copper-T. The other two contain progestin (Mirena) and progesterone, which *can* vary your cycles or sometimes stop them altogether. I'd definitely pick the Progestasert with the real progesterone over the Mirena...I'm just wary of progesTIN by itself since depo.

Hey I totally agree with you that its normal to have a period. I had the copper-T before I was diagnosed, after I was diagnosed I used mirena for 2 yrs but I did not get my at all during that time so I had it taken out. I guess I like being able to monitor my health and symptoms, I'm useing yasmin now.

Default Mirena

Ok so it is ok to have the Mirena with PCOS? I was reading up on it last night and came across a few sites that said you should never have it since one of it's side effects is ovarian cysts(we have enough of a problem with those already). I have had my Mirena in for a yr now, and have recently started breaking out bad. Also I started exercising 3-4 days a week doing 40 mins of cardio and some strength training, in two months I have only lost 5lbs. I have read that the Mirena can cause weight gain, acne and headaches. I have all of the above and have been freaking out all day about getting this thing outta me. I don't have many other BC options since the pill makes me a total you know what and my DH is allergic to spermicide and I have a latex allergy(what a great couple we are huh, lol).
I also take 1000mg met a day when i remember too. I am going to try and switch to the XR so I only have to take it once a day and at night.
It's nice to hear other women out there have this IUD an PCOS, a yr ago I couldn't find anyone.

If you just want birth control, try the copper--it doesn't have the hormones that cause the IR, breakouts, etc. You couldn't pay me enough to put a progesTIN IUD in--I haven't taken ProgesTIN since depo and I don't ever plan to again either if I can help it.

Unhappy Kenziemom:

Please do not get a Mirena- that was the start of my personal hell- I had Mirena inserted after my daughter was born, my breast milk supply sucked, (declined significantly) later I had no sex drive, then the backne - acne in my back (i never had) was so gross in addition I began to have more and stronger than usual migranes- I was an emotional mess and the pounds I had lost in the 3 months of no mirena came back with a vengance- I had such bad headaches- I against the will of my dentist had a molar pulled (it was healthy) but that side of my face and head hurt so bad and localized in that area.
After I had it removed the mirena left me in such a hormonal mess- Gain weight and my OB said it offset PCOS. It is genetic but in my case it kick started it - so I am still an emotional mess I have been spotting and bleeding for over a year- I run 12 miles a week- and are very active but the pounds keep piling.
Some times I feel so defeated I do not want to get dressed- go to work or watch my kids- I just want to cry- I hate feeling this way- tired, sad, defeated, fat, gross, and I never felt this way before - ever. I started taking Metamorfin- I always watch what I eat- everything is fresh- not processed- organic- no candy no soda- whole grain- and yet I feel and look like I have eaten Mc donalds for a whole week non stop. I have not lost a pound. I had also tried herbal- glucosamin and adreanal support with no results.
How long before Metamorfin helps I have only been taking 500 for a week now 1000 for another?

PLEASE SAY NO TO MIRENA!!!!!!
