I just wanted to add my experience with the mirena. I am thinking about having it removed also. I had it inserted when my son was 3 months old and he will be 7 months on Nov 10th. I have had spotting ever since I had it inserted. I did not have any pain at all but I have had babies so that might make a difference. I am thinking about having it removed because of the spotting, and my husband can still feel it when we have sex (not often because of the non stop spotting) and I am also noticing I am gaining weight. I had lost weight after having my son since I am nursing but not its coming back. I have not really had a period at all but I would rather a period then wearing a panty liner every day.

Have you seen your doctor since having it implanted? What did they say? You can have the string trimmed. The possible reason why he can still feel it is because it hasn't wrapped around your cervix completely. And I was told that abnormal spotting/bleeding is normal for up to 6-8 months after inserted. Either way I hope you find what works for you.
I have had the Mirena 14 months now. For the last month I have been a total u know what, I gained 10 lbs in two weeks, and have had pain like I haven't had since I was first diagnosed in 2005! I went to my gyn and he chk'ed to make sure it was still in place (it was) so he sent me back to my PCOS fertility specialist and after 2 ultrasounds and a panel of bloodwork, they have decided that I had a 15 sonometer cyst that burst and now I have a greater than 5 sonometer cyst that could rupture at any time along with my regular polycystic ovaries. Basically, my PCOS doc feels like the Mirena is causing my PCOS to go into overdrive and produce rupturing-capable cysts. Needless to say, I will probably be having it removed next month.
I hope no one minds me posting this, but I wanted to update again So after having my Mirena removed, I tried Yaz. It was horrible and after about 6 weeks, I quit taking it. It took me almost 2 solid years to get pregnant with my first son and a year with my second (with 2 m/c before getting preggo with him). But because of that, DH and I decided to just be open to whatever happened....and guess what? I got a BFP my first cycle off of YAZ! I'm posting here to say, that although I had complications with the Mirena, it did not affect my ability to get pregnant or stay pregnant and I hope that helps someone Sometimes I think maybe it actually helped me along. I am 25 weeks with a healthy baby boy right now!
I have had my Mirena for three years now and have loved it. I have not had one period since I got it. Now I am having alot more side effects of PCOS like hair growth, wt. gain, and pelvic tenderness. I was losing wt. and I'm still working my butt off and gaining. I talked to my friend (she's a doctor) and she says I need to be on bcp to get my hormone levels to be steady. I haven't talked to my ob yet, but what do you think?
I'll update my situation today also... It appears now that I am in perimenopause. I have estrogen dominance and very low progesterone... so the compounding pharmacist will talk to the gyn about taking out the mirena... and put me on progesterone cream along with some things that will cause the excess estrogen to release from my body. Evidently, bcp's shut down your ovaries and put you in pre menopause... well ding ding ding! Here I am at 38 and these things have all started to occur this past year. Whether or not they are a result of the Mirena, "iffy"... but that seems to be one of the recommended treatments to have it removed.
I'm not going to give a story about how bad it has been. It's not been horrible... just that the past few months especially, things have gone a little awry... and I do see a need to get it fixed now rather than later down the road when it could get out of hand....

I just got the mirena IUD inserted almost a week ago now and the only thing that i am noticing that is uncomfortable is it has made me very constipated and have a constant bloated feeling. The second they fit it and i left the office i had to go straight to the restroom and couldnt do anything. I have started to take metimucil but to no avail so far. Any one know if this goes away? I would almost rather deal with the other symptoms then deal with harsh side effects from something like this. My specialist really didnt give me an explanation to how this is supposed to help in the first place but I am not a medical proffessional and my family doctor and the second specialist all told me that this would be my 'fix all' without really explaining anything. I will continue to post questions about this most likely if i keep having issues such as these. Everyone is so different that you cant always go on what everyone else is saying, hormome ratio's are different and lifestyle/diet are also factors so you cant really tell unless you give it a chance. I have had issues from the moment i first got my period to now and they have progressively gotten worse over the years, starting out with unusual period pattern into once every couple months, then a period that is really heavy and lasts a little longer to every three months to the point where i wont get it from 3-4-6mnths then bleed till i start taking the pill again. i would normally go off the pill when my period regulated cuz i have no memory and the side effects there are horrible too. it takes longer and longer for my period to go away even with the pill and the last stint lasted about 6mnths of straight bleeding before the pill started working to get rid of it. Thats when my doctor started testing me for pcos and so now here i am, trying something i dont really think will help and am very uncomfortable. sorry for the rant, i dont have anyone really to talk to about all this, my boyfriend can only take so much....lol....
so i have now had the mirena in for over a month, and havent stopped bleeding/spotting (some days are spots, others full on bleeding) since i had it insterted. i havent noticed a change in much else other then my moods, i tend to swing them a little more then usual, but maybe thats my body getting used to the hormones being what they are. i will keep you up to date again if you want in another month or so and can let you know if it gets better or not.
I got my at the end of March, and it has taken 6 weeks for me to stop bleeding completely. In that time I think I was a bit moodier, but now I feel more even keeled.

so its been 2 months now, thought i would let you know the bloating seems to be subsiding and i am no longer spotting as of earier this week. the abdominal pain i have been having has lessened recently too, and i think another month and my body will have adjusted fully to this and im not noticing any new complications, and trust me im paraniod enough that every detail means something, but i have been feeling a bit better in alot of respects as of recently.
hope the information helps you out and if anything changes i will post again about it.
i got mirena inserted on may 19th, and i ahvent relly had any probs, spotting after period and a little b4 but nothing ott so far so good but i notice 1st day of bleeding is light and i hate that as it hurts more than a heavy flow or mod flow. seem more motivated for exercise as well.
oh my lord, i was thinking of getting some form of IUD after having my baby as dh and i are tired of using condoms. my pcos is under control and i have regualr periods every month. I am absolutely not going to take BCPs ever again, they were horrible, and it took me years to recover. they also make me crazy and make me bleed all the time. one of my clients has a copper iud for her endometriosis but i haven't been able to ask her about it. now i am scared. i want to be able to lose the baby weight afterward, and i was thinking of getting one a few months after the baby comes. also, i don't have any ins (right now i am getting pink medicaid) and i can only imagine the cost. i would hate to pay for something to screw me up. i have worked so hard to get it under control. this thread has really got me thinking. what else is there besides iud, bcps, condoms and caps? im not interested in any cervical caps or anything, i cannot put stuff up there.
