Default Mirena and PCOS

I am 28 years old and since my son was born almost 5 years ago I have gained about 60lbs. I was diagnosed with PCOS about a week ago. My doctor said I should try birth control, which we went ahead and did. I chose the Mirena because of the constant hormones sent to my ovaries. I also have just started taking Metaformin 500mg 3x a day and Spironolactone 25mg once a day. Doc said that with that combination I should be able to finally drop some weight and get rid of my carb cravings. Does anyone else have a Mirena? My doctor also recommended that I may want to look into Veniqua for facial hair. Sorry if I am rambling, there are just so many questions that is easier and less embarrasing to ask over the internet than in person. Will the Spironolactone help with facial hair as well as the thinning of my hair on top?

Any answers or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There are several of us who have the Mirena. So far I am pleased with mine. It has been almost 2 months.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION ABOUT MIRENA [excerpts]
. . . . . .Ovarian cysts may occur and typically disappear. . . . . . .. Missing periods or irregular bleeding is common in the first few months followed by shorter, lighter periods.

I am not sure if the thing about "ovarian cysts" is actaully something to be concerned about but in my mind it is a red flag and probably worth knowing more about for someone with PCOS who uses Minena. Also If I understand correctly - Mirena contains/releases a small amount of progestin but no estrogen. A progestin only product would not be my first choice.

Since you already have it "installed" you should likely learn more about it before you make any changes. If I were you - I might contact the company and see what they have to say about Mirena and PCOS - and then talk it over with your doctor. If after that you decide the Mirena is not for you - one other product that you might want to research is the Nuva ring -- it also has the advantage of releasing its hormones continously thoughout the day - as opposed to a pill that you take once a day -- it can also be used "continuously" - no week off for a period - which I personally think can be advantagous for PCOS because you get better ovarian suppression by using it all the time - this is controversal and some people strongly disagree with the practice. The nuvaring is only something you have to think about occasionally more than Mirena but a lot less still than the pill. Also Nuvaring contain progestin and estrogen.

If after researching more you decide that the progestin only thing is the main issue with Mirena - you might also as you doctor about the possibility of an additional estrogen product - to help balance things out.

I had a terrible experience with the Mirena. Check into the side effects-even the rare side effects and if you start noticing any of them I would have it removed. I had mine for over four years and had bad side effects. I kept going in to the Dr having ultrasounds to check the placement of the Mirena and was also complaining of lots of different symptoms. They told me it couldn't be the Mirena because there wasn't enough hormones in it to bother me and the placement they said was fine. I finally did my own research because I was at the end of my rope, and found that I had about 80% of the rare side effects. I went to my Dr and demanded to have it removed, she couldn't get it out. She sent me to another Dr who tried to remove it and couldn't. I was then scheduled to have it surgically removed, but they wanted to do another ultrasound to check the placement, so I had that done and they said the placement was fine. I went in for the surgery and was told it would be a 5 minute procedure-10 minutes worst case scenario if it was embedded into my uterus. The procedure took 30 minutes, the Dr had to use a camera to find it, and then didn't want to talk to us about it at all. I felt so much better after I had it removed. I think for some women it works well but I wouldn't want any other woman to go through what I did with the Mirena. Just listen to your own body and don't let the Dr make your decisions for you! I am taking 1000 met and 50 spiro, but I wasn't taking any meds while on the Mirena. Good Luck!
