Default Miscarriage #3/ Metformin....

Iam just alittle ticked off right now. I just had my third miscarriage on thursday ending in a d&c. I was almost 10 weeks the other two happened before 6 weeks and ended on their own. I was sent to a RE when I had my second miscarriage they did lots of testing and the only thing they found was that my insulin was still elevated. They uped my metformin to 1500 mg time released and decided to try me on clomid to help produced better quality eggs. I have always had periods and never much trouble getting pregnant. I responded well to the clomid produced 5 follicles and got pregnant the first round couldnt believe it. I went in to have my levels checked 14 days past ovulation they were 113 and at 17 they were 485 progesterone over 45. They said everything looked great had me come in for an ultrasound two weeks later. So i went in at 61/2 weeks had it done everything looked great saw heartbeat was at 123. The Re tried to reassure me that my miscarriage rate was in the single digits and they thought everything would be fine and to send them a pic of the baby, they then turned me back over to my ob. They did drop my met to 5oo mg on that appt. I made an appt with my ob for 3 weeks later went in at almost 10 weeks and when they did an ultrasound there was nothing there just an empty sac like the baby just dissolved. I asked about lowering the met he said he didnt think it caused anything. I have done tons of research and found similar situations when met is dropped or stopped. I just find it hard to believe it wasnt the cause maybe.

Iam just really kinda pissed off now. I was sad depressed still am but now mad to. I was just wondering what your thoughts were on my situation and if anyone has ever went through this or stayed on met? My ob had told me before he was going to keep me on first 12 weeks and the Re was saying he likes people off by 10 weeks. Iam scared now to try and get pregnant again this time was worse with the d&c and stuff and I will be going back to the Re and I was some answers tired of hearing it just happens cause I dont think it does three times. Sorry I was ranting I just want some help

I was on 1500 mg met ER my entire pregnancy with DS and that was the only time that I went to term. I am sorry that this happened to you. I also would question that the decrease in Met might have had something to do with it. I found that Met holds my pregnancies and without it, I would m/c.
(((HUGS))) I wish there was somehting that I could say to make you feel better. When you get pg again make sure they keep you on the 1500mg at least through the first tri. I don't know if decreasing the met had anything to do with it or not but it would be worth the try. Have you had any testing done. I know that my RE would not do m/c testing until I had a third m/c. I would ask for it. There could be something else.

The first thing they did when we went to see the RE is testing. They did lots of blood work and checked me for immune disorders and blood clotting disorder. They also checked my husbands sperm and genetic factors. Iam really not sure of what all they tested for but the only thing they seemed to find was that my insulin levels were still pretty elevated. Thats another reason why I just think its weird everything was fine until then. I guess alot of doctors dont like to keep u on met the whole pregnancy because they have not done enough studies. I do want to find out about the blood clotting cause I have heard u can test neg and then positive. I did though have an issue with bleeding alot during the d&c which they had to give me something to stop it, so I wouldnt want to take baby aspirin if I didnt need it. Thanks for responding Iam just really frusterated right now.

I'm so sorry for your losses. I was on 1500mg of met both times I miscarried. Maybe try finding a different doctor if you are not happy with your current one. You need to be comfortable with what they are doing to/for you.

Shanna - I am so sorry ..& I also just had my 3rd m/c and I am VERY angry too. Yes I was sad originally but now I am just really angry. Why the heck can't the doctors figure this stuff out..its seems to be such a guessing game and oops if they guess wrong we have a m/c. My first m/c was before I was diagnosed and was b.c low progesterone levels 2nd was a blighted ovum. #3rd who knows.

My DD was after #2m/c and I was taken off met as soon as I we got a positive. Were they able to do a testing when you had a D&C? My results still have not come back yet.

I am sorry I am not more help .. Hang in there.

I was also on 1500 mg of met with my second m/c. I am so sorry for your losses, for me, I will refuse to stop my met before 10-12 weeks.

You will never know, unfortunately, whether the met was the cause or not. But my RE and myself are both in agreement that "better safe than sorry", and for me, I wouldn't be lowering my met and I would be argueing with my dr and/or finding a new dr who will let you continue the met for the first tri, at the very least.

I would say if you think dropping it is not right for you, then tell them you don't want to drop it. I was on 2000 mg of met my first trimester with ds. I just had an early m/c and was not on met at all. But I'm also six years older.

I'm very sorry for your loss.
I took met the entire pregnancy with my son,and he was/is perfectly healthy. This last time my doc wanted me to stop right away but I didn't. I had only enough to get through 13 weeks and she would not renew. My baby died 4 weeks later. I truly believe it had something to do with met. My $.02

Hey Shanna,

I had a mc in Feb, my doctor insisted I stop taking the met, a week after I did the baby died. I told him this next time I'm not stopping it. Some women just need it. Tell them next time that you won't stop.

Take care and I hope you get pregnant again soon.

first time here, and this was exactly the thread I was looking, but like always, lots of questions with few answers.

I stopped met (1000) as soon as I got a +, though I was having a very unusually long cycle so I'm not sure how far along I was. When I called to make my first appt with my OB I was told I could either stay on or stop. My first OB appt was 8w after that and it was a blighted ovum. Just a sac measuring 8w.
It's been 10m since and I'm not sure what to do.
