Default Miscarriage - Does Met reduce the risk?

I have just started taking Metformin. 500mg 1x daily for one week and increasing to 1 twice daily for week two and finally 1 three times a day by week three. This is only my second day and so far so good. I only feel the slightest bit nauseous but not really and have been a bit tired. Could be coincidental. I took Clomid to fall pregnant with Mackenzie (ds) and then got gestational diabetes. About five or six months after having (ds) I got a regular period (even though was still breastfeeding) and did have until I conceived #2 naturally. Unfortunately about a month ago at seven and a half weeks, I miscarried. I was umming and arring about taking Metformin because my body seemed to be reasonably normal (compared to before conceiving Mackenzie). Mentally I feel fantastic, best I have felt since puberty and I finally had a regular period - that had never happend before. I am sure I read somewhere that Metformin MAY reduce the risk of miscarriage, but I'm not sure. I don't go back to see the specialist until next month and I just decided, as I have the prescription, I may as well give it a go. Any thoughts?
Donna.

Hello Donna......

So sorry about your loss
From my experience with met, it does(in most cases)reduce the risk of m/c and that is why most Drs like you to stay on it until your 12th week of pregnancy some keep you on longer.
I have type 2 diabetes and I am on 1500 mgs of glucophage(met) daily to help with my PCOS too.
I got pregnant (using IUI) in July of 2002 and m/c at 6 weeks. I did not know any better and I had quit ALL meds, including my met.......once I got to talking to the nurse, I told her I quit taking met and she asked why....I said noone in your office told me any different and I thought any drugs may harm the baby so I stopped.
Peggy(the nurse) explained that met helps reduce the risk of m/c.......I then felt as if it was all my fault
I then got pregnant (using IUI again) with Bryan in Nov of 2002, I stayed on it until 12 weeks

Best of luck with #2, whenever that may be.
Take care,
Beth

Thanks Beth, I thought this was the case, but wasn't sure and I also remembered reading that it is best to stay on Metformin for at least the first trimester, so this also reinforced my ideas. How horrible for you to blame yourself for your mc, I hope you realise now that it wasn't your fault, how could you know, EVERYONE knows that you don't take medication whilst you are pregnant, I would think that this would be a natural thing to do. Your little Bryan looks very cute, so good things obviously come to those who wait!
Donna.
