Unhappy Misdiagnosed?????

Has anyone ever got tested for hypothyroidism and the test came back normal, but you had all the classic symptoms. Can hypothyroidism be misdiagnosed by the Doctor. Because I got my thyroid checked a year ago and the results came back normal. But I still get all the classic symptoms one being low body tempature. I take my temp in the morning and it is almost always under 97.8. I also always have cold hands and feet. There is a whole list of symptoms that I have. Thanks for any advice you may give or suggestions.

Not sure.. did u get checked for iron levels? I have low iron and my hands and feet are always cold. Ask your doc for more tests. Good luck!

Yes my iron levels were checked and the Doctor did say that I was anemic. But can anemia cause the same symptoms as hypothyroidism?

Yes, anemia and even low ferritin (iron stores) can mimic hypothyroidism. Low iron inhibits thyroid function, and interestingly, low thyroid often contributes to low iron. I've got a bunch of research saved about that if you are interested.

You can't rule out hypothyroidism, though, without more tests than the usual ones given by docs for screening. Your doc probably ran a TSH and a full T4, but if you have symptoms you need a Free T4, Free T3, and possibly a TPO antibodies test.

YES!!!!!!!!!

The same exact thing happened to me for YEARS. I don't know where you are located but I found an Endo. who REALLY helps with the typical misdiagnosis.
He takes the standard tests a LOT further to find the real case with your thyroid. Here is an excerpt from a website I found about endo's in GA:

Another reader recommends Dr. Milton:
"I realize that there are other recommendations for Dr. Milton already posted. That's the way I found him. But I must tell everyone that I have been seeing him since March, 2002. He is terrific. I had been to 4 doctors who told me that I was just severely depressed. One sent me to a psychiatrist. I just kept telling all of them that I was only depressed because they wouldn't listen and treat my hypothyroidism. Dr. Milton did extensive blood work. I am now on Armour and Cytomel and I'm doing better all the time. He is terrific and I recommend him highly."

I am exactly the same!

i get extremely cold sometimes, so much so i have to stay in the shower for a long time to warm up!

Have you had an ultrasound of your thyroid? I have normal hormone levels, but the ultrasound showed hypothyroidic nodes on my thyroid. It was also enlarged. If you haven't had an U/s maybe you should ask for one.

I also get migraines when I get really cold sometimes? Anyone heard of that linked to an underactive thyroid?

Smile It's all about the antibodies

Can I just say that's the story of my life. In my early twenties I started having all kinds of problems and it took 5 years to finally get an answer. My TSH tests were all in the normal range. When my father-in-law, who's an R.N. suggested there may be something seriously wrong with my thyroid I did some research. With Hashimoto's hypothyroiditis your levels can fluctuate so it is possible for you TSH to be in the normal range at times (and like me, conveniently when you have the tests done). I told my doctor that I have all the symptoms and she ordered an Anti-thyroperoxidase test, which tests for the antibodies that attack your thyroid. That came back off the chart! So finally after 5 years of suffering, I'm starting thyroid treatment. What I don't understand is that if Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism, why doesn't every doc order the antibody test? And now my doctor thinks I have P.C.O.S. too. I'd been on b.c. pills for 5 years, but went off them in November, hoping it would help me feel better, but I haven't had a period since then. I guess they're linked? Anyway, good luck. I wouldn't wish what I've been through on anyone!

P.S. Here's a short list of my symptoms:
Digestive problems (bigtime!), migraines, depression, anxiety, weight gain for no reason and impossible to lose weight, sensitivity to EVERYTHING (smells, sunlight, temperature), hair falling out, dry itchy skin, weakness, extreme fatigue, hard to recover from infections.

I was told I was normal the first time I was checked for hypothyroidism. I then requested copies of my lab work and looked up results online and found out that they had changed the tsh levels to be treated from .5- 5.5 to .5- 3.0 and that being 4.96 was no longer normal. The labs how ever have not changed the normal range so most doctors just check to see if it shows normal or abnormal and dont look at your actual tsh level. I also am anemic and my iron levels dropped from my normal 8 range down to 5.6 after during pregnancies. Its very possible you were misdiagnosed. just ask for a copy of your lab and research it yourself. if you are not in the new normal range change doctors.
