Missed miscarriage No. 2, question for women with repeat m/c
Hi ladies,
I am feeling devastated today by my second missed miscarriage. Add to the fact that I´m almost 40 and it took me two years to get pregnant after my first angel. It is so indescribable the grief, especially because now I am wondering what are my odds for ever carrying a healthy baby to term. I feel like I´m watching the death of my maternity in slow motion.
Yesterday we went in for an ultrasound after having seen a strong h/b at 7 weeks and found that the baby had died and that part of the gestational sac had broken off. The gestational sac also separated with my first m/c. This is something I have never heard of before and I cannot find anything on it on the Intenet--especially occurring so early in the pregnancy. I don't spot or bleed or cramp so I have no idea when it occurs. I had a D & C and genetic testing with my first m/c and found that the baby had Trisomy 16.
With this pregnancy I had my progesterone tested and had a p4 of 26 on 18 DPO. Even so, I supplemented with progesterone just in case. So I can't figure out if the sac breaking because of a hormonal issue (maybe related to my age?) or if it has something to do with the baby.
This time I don't want a D & C, way too expensive and tramautic. We're waiting for the baby to be expelled naturally and if that doesn't occur soon, then we will use meds.
Any thoughts or insights on the breaking of the gestational sac would be appreciated! Thanks for reading this. I just feel like my heart is breaking again and again... and I know may of you can relate!!! Hugs and kisses from Mexico xxx

Sorry for your loss Kim! I had 2 miscarriages myself. The 1st natural the 2nd was a missed mis. and I had a D&C on January 9th. My heart was broken too! I dont know anything about a breaking gest. sac-sorry. For me they could give me no reason why I miscarried. It is very hard but I will keep you in my prayers and I hope it gets easier in time.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the broken gestational sac, but I did want to encourage you that a viable pregnancy may still be able to happen...
I was diagnosed with PCOS, tried for almost 2 years and became pregnant and had a little one. This was followed by 2 missed misscarriages, but then 4.5 years later, without assistance, we became pregnant with our second. Now we have experienced 2 more missed misscarriages since our 2nd child and haven't figured out how to repeat what happened to have a viable one, but somehow our 2 children beat the odds and I hope that this will be your story too.
hello dear...i also had a miscarriage on the 18th...i work in an ER and all of a sudden i started bleeding a ton with LARGE CLOTS!! i had really bad cramps and horrible back pain!! this is my 2nd miscarriage in 2 years....i dont think we well ever have our baby...i was DX with PCOS a year ago...I kno that i need to loss weight but it is harder than it sounds....i need to find help soon!! im goin crazy.................
My first two m/c happened too "neatly" for there to be any follow-up after the fact, beyond confirming everything had passed - but the 3rd, my body just didn't want to give up. Follow-up scans showed the sac etc "breaking down" but still very much present. Is it possible that you just caught the loss late enough after it actually ended that things had started breaking down already? I'm not exactly sure what you mean by parts of the sac breaking off. That's my guess, though - that is was an effect of the m/c, and not a cause.
I'm so sorry this happened to you again.
Are you still going to move through with adoption?? Hopefully you have something positive to focus on still.

Thank you ladies for your replies. From each one I take a little piece of hope. ((HUGS)) to all of you who have experienced multiple losses... Let's not give up!!!!!!
I am feeling much better today. Baby steps, they say... Yes, I am very fortunate that our application to be adoptive parents was accepted last month. If that had not been the case, I´m not sure how I would be feeling right now, but definitely my mental state would be far worse! It's funny because I had accepted that I wasn't going to get pregnant again and had all my positive energies focused on the adoption. It came as such a surprise. And also funny how quickly you get attached to your little sprout and dream of the day he or she will be born. It's hard to let go of that dream from one day to the next...
Runner Duck--I hadn't thought of that interpretation--that the sac broke down after the pregnancy had failed. That is probably exactly what happened--I still haven't gone back to the doctor to resolve my doubts about it. (I'm avoiding a D&C and waiting to see if baby is expelled naturally.) I truly hope that it is the case... I guess I worried about the sac breaking because in my first pregnancy it happened very soon. However, the first pregnancy was definitely not normal from the beginning and didn't advance as far as the second, we saw the faintest heartbeat (very slow) but it was clearly not viable.

Medically, there is no need to rush things. It can take a while (up until the end of what would have been the first trimester) for your body to let go of a pregnancy on it's own, but if you are OK mentally with riding it out, it's fine to wait (within reason).
I'm not a fan of rushing into the D&C myself. The risks of scarring and adding to your risk of m/c in the future are small, but they are there, and if you don't want to take those risks right away, there's no compelling reason to do so.
I used cytotec to speed mine along - it worked perfectly the first time, didn't need it the second, didn't work so perfectly the last time... but still never had a D&C.

Hugs and best wishes for the future!! I'm so sorry for both of your heartbreaks. I hope that the near future involves children to love, whether through adoption or the old fashioned way... or both! On the broken sac issue, I don't think I've heard it described that way before, more like collapsed in some cases. I bet that it's after the heartbeat has stopped and nothing is giving the sac a reason to hold together, just a guess. (((Hugs)))
