Ok, with the software upgrade, I'm also upgrading the server...
WHAT, AGAIN, KAT ARE YOU CRAZY?!?!?!?
No, I'm not crazy, the ONLY reason I'm doing this is because we got a GREAT deal on a GREAT server. I'm told that we should be ULTRA fast even if there are close to 500 people on the boards, and with more memory added, we should be fine up to 700 concurrent members. During peak hours, we tend to have 200+, so we should be smokin' on this new one. (even the people on dial up should be smokin')
SO (and here's the good part), with the extra horsepower, I'm going to add:
- individual JOURNALS that are part of the message board system (only registered members can have them)
- a PHOTO GALLERY that is also part of the message board system (only registered members can have them)
- the chatroom will be back. QUESTION: Can someone tell me how many people used to be in chat during peak times? If the numbers stay under 25ct, I might get digichat back. (anyone remember the digichat room? It was REALLY good, but it's kind of pricey.)
- the research articles forum is being moved to a new database that will allow for better searching of specific issues.
- the new board has a 'hack' that will also allow you to AVOID seeing specific forums on 'new threads' search.
(there's more stuff, but that's all I can think of from the top of my head)
One company is handling all of the installations, upgrades, and migrations, so everything should be fairly smooth this time. (better be ) They've been doing some optimization on this board, with no downtime, and no glitches, so I'm pretty confident in this team.

Wow Kat! That is awesome! I don't remember the numbers in the chat room getting over 25, but I didn't frequent it as often as others. Those upgrades sound awesome!! Kristi

Over the course of the next week. I'm only going to shut the board down during the last phase of the migration, and it shouldn't be too long. The longest 'wait' will be for the DNS change, and I have no control over that. It's generally 2-72 hours...
As soon as I know they're migrating the board, I'll post a heads up.
I'm HOPING they can do it this weekend, but something else needed to be done to the new server. They're still going to try to get it done by Monday.
The other changes will happen after that (but those are painless changes - it's the migration that's a pain.)

Usually, peak times, we'd get about 16 people, never seen more than 20 in he nearly 5 years I've been with you and been chatting, so I hope that helps you make your choice.
I also want to add on the subject that I DO remember digichat, and what I remember most is it used to be a paun for crashing people's computers, in fact, we've had several different chatrooms, as you know, and I'd say it was the most tempromental of the lot.
I think, from what I've been told from the old hands and our new chatters, that the one we have now is favourite for several reasons. One of the main ones being you HAVE to be registered with SC to use it so we don't get he freaks and oddballs we've had to put up with in other chatrooms, and that's a HUGE plus.
I'm sure if others were asked they'd have other things to say about it but that's what the blind biologist thinks anyway.

Thanks for the input on Digichat. If you all like the current room best, we'll stick with that one (It's called FlashChat). I'm all for BETTER and CHEAPER!

2-72 hours.....ummmmm i dont know if i can hold out that long. it will probably be on a day that i am off and i am usually on the SC all day long.
I will be in some serious denial.

LOL! Actually I can't stand upgrades, it totally stresses me out.
But this last software upgrade sounds really good AND the new server will save close to $200 per month in server fees - AND it's a better server! (I do have a BARGAIN addiction )
