Exclamation Mom of teen PCOS Daughter, I need HELP!!

Thought I would update and I need help and advice with some things.

DD 17 has been on met for almost a month. She should have started 2nd month but has been skipping doses. She was very sick with tonsillitis and is on antibiotics for that. She was trying to take the met and antibiotic seperately. She is better and almost finished with the a/b.
She takes the met 500mg 1x a day at night. However although she started out eating IR, she has not done so well latley. I think she has been skipping the dose to avoid s/e. She is also on yaz bcp and takes that with out fail.

She is due to have bloodwork in the next few weeks. To see how the met is moving the hormones..

*What should she be tested for?
*Does she need to be tested on a certain cycle day since she is on a BCP?
*Should she continue the BCP? She is not sexually active and the yaz has given her relief from the irratic and heavy Af. She has had "quality of life' with them as she was a camp counselor this summer.

*Should we wait til she has taken the met more regularly and consistantly before testing bloodwork is done?

*She is having her tonsils out in Oct, should she discontinue the met prior to surgery?

* I am a bit scared and discouraged, but trying really hard to be helpful and not micromanage, but she needs to take more responsiblilty as well.
Any advice or wisdom would be appreciated!

I know teenagers think they are "bullet proof", I understand that I really do. She has been loosing a bit of weight and is changing shape. Others are starting to comment on how she looks. I know slow and steady changes eventually become habits. But with diabetes thick on both sides of our family, I am scared.
Thanks for the chance to vent and any input!

*What should she be tested for?

Depends what out her on the met in the first place. usually baseline hormine/insulin labs are run and then you compare them after a few months on met to se if they are improving. She should also be tested for liver/kidney enzymes to make sure the drug is clearing the body properly and vitamin B12 levels.

*Does she need to be tested on a certain cycle day since she is on a BCP?

Depends on the tests run. I would speak to her Dr or lab tech.

*Should she continue the BCP? She is not sexually active and the yaz has given her relief from the irratic and heavy Af. She has had "quality of life' with them as she was a camp counselor this summer.

That's a pretty personal choice. It depends on if her goals are to manage her symptoms or try to treat the IR alone. Some bcp worsen IR, and she may have trouble when she decides to become pregnant later on in life if her body relies too heavily on the bcp...that's what happened to me. But a dialogue with the dr and some consideration of what her goals are long and short term will help decide what is best for her.

*Should we wait til she has taken the met more regularly and consistantly before testing bloodwork is done?

I would, but her Doc may just want to see how it's working. She definetly needs to get the drug regularly dosed in order to see best results.

*She is having her tonsils out in Oct, should she discontinue the met prior to surgery?

Speak with her Dr...he will be able to counsel with you.

Good luck!

If she is skipping the doses of MET because of the s/e then ask your dr about the MET XR (slow release). I had terrible side effects on the regular MET, but haven't had any probs on the slow release, that might help her take it w.out skipping doses!! Good luck!!
