I think the idea is probably to catch any changes in the ability of your insulin to control glucose early. I do this myself, but my MD and I haven't discussed it. My thinking is this: I know my fasting baseline. (Usually between 80-100, maybe 110.) If I start seeing a lot of higher readings (115, 120,125+), I will call the doctor immediately. I'm not on metformin YET, but would definately go on it if I thought my body needed a break. Once those beta cells are dead, they are dead.
