I started back on Metformin on Monday. I'm on 500mg for the first 7 days, then 1000mg for the next 7 days, and so on. Since doing so, I've had the following problems:
Raging headaches that just won't go away, not with food, not with water, not with ibuprofen
Complete lethargy... I'm even more tired than usual, and it's a struggle to keep my eyes open.
Extremely dry skin, primarly on my face and hands, but in other areas as well.
Definite loss of appetite, though I'm fairly certain that comes naturally with the Met.
I'm just trying to figure out if it's cutting out the caffeine, cutting back on carbs, stress, the medication, or just my life that's causing all this. I feel like I'm going to implode!
Hang in there Devilbunny! It'll all get better soon. The first two weeks are the toughest. At least you haven't mentioned the worst side effect of starting med...the squirts! lol You have something to be thankful about!
I've actually been lucky with that aspect of met. I was on it once before. The nausea passed on day one and the runs passed on day two. Now I just feel icky, and the headache won't break.
I just started Met too, what? three weeks ago? I think so. And I have the exact same side effects, minus the headaches. I get them, but not so bad I cannot handle them.
I am extremely tired, more than I was before, and this confuses me, I thought you're supposed to get more energy?
My skin is so dry it's flaky, and the tip of my thumb just cracked open last night, ouch! (even though I put on lotion ALL the time)
I am not complaining about the loss of appetite, I needed for that to happen.
I want to believe these s/e will be only temporary.
Just wait, it'll be all good.

Devilbunny
Caffein withdrawl and restricting carb intact both induce withdrawl headaches. When I gave up caffeinated coffee I was in bed with the WORST headache I have ever experienced and nothing could touch it...after a few days it subsided and I feel much better now. Low carbing can also trigger withdrawl headaches depending on the extent of ur carb addiction and how low carb u are going.....best of luck u will feel better soon I am sure

i honestly don't think i've cut my carbs so long that i'd have withdrawals... I thought the caffeine might be a part of it, but I really only have one coffee per day -- I didn't think it was enough to bring on such a prolonged intense headache! I have also had more than my fair share of stress this week, so that could very well be the primary cause.
I'm hanging in there. Thanks for the kind words, all.
I only drank one cup of coffee in the morning too, and usually didn't even get a chance to finish that off before I had to rush off to work...its amazing how dependant ur body can become on caffein...
take care

Hi....I have never been a huge caffeine drinker but once I quit coffee completely I got the most terrible headaches I couldnt get rid of no matter what I tried, so I have gone back to having 1-2 cups of coffee a day and the headaches are all but gone x
Hope you feel better soon x

Hope you feel better soon. I've been fortunate about few side effects with met. I was going to ask - are you drinking enough water? And, with the low carbing, are you eating enough? You need to have enough to function.
Stress is enough to give you a headache. Will the stress causing factor in your life be reduced at all?
Good luck!

I'm glad I read this. Other than the headaches, I've been having all the same symptoms and I've been on Met as long as you have. I could not figure out the dry skin. It has been driving me crazy. I thought I wasn't drinking enough water but there's only so much I can drink! Hopefully, these are temporary side effects and not permanent.
