Unhappy morning blood sugar getting higher......

About two months ago, I found signs that I probably have insulin resistance (Acanthosis Nigricans on my neck, greater central obesity, fatigue, signs of reactive hypoglycemia etc). My doctor, a public clinic, since I have no insurance, decided to run a glucose tol. test, but didn't tell me NOT to restrict carbs before hand. Since my highest score, at two hours, was 135, she said, nope, no insulin resistance! However, after hitting 135, I plunged like the proverbial rock. Since then, I've started testing my blood sugar and this last week, my morning average has been about 105, with it ranging from 96 to close to 120! The doctor did not run an insulin levels check because the glucose tol. test was less costly...but I just talked to the lab and the insulin test costs about $55, so I feel like I should insist on it being run next time. Wouldn't you say that a 6 day morning avg of 105 is too high? Thinking insulin resistance/pre diabetes at this point.

PS. I changed to a lower carb/sugar diet in early September when I discovered this, and I am slowly loosing weight, but it seems to have tapered off.

thanks,
Jeanne

105 is fine. My standard "early morning" sugar is between 80-140, and anything under 120 is considered perfectly fine Yes, be careful with your sugars, but even 135 is not all that terrible. When I was diagnosed my sugar was 485! And after that, it went up so high the machines couldn't read it! And my a1c found out that my 3-month average was somewhere around 300.

Pre-diabetes is considered 120-140, honestly, as a morning average. (Dad is pre-d, so I'm getting all this info ) By all means, continue with low carb if you think it helps, but don't get bunched up about 105

what I've been seeing online is that over 100 fasting or morning is now the cutoff for pre-diabetes... There seems to be some discrepancy over plasma vs. capillary/whole blood scale. My morning blood sugars have been as high as around 118 lately..but the avg was 105...I think the lowest was around 96.

NIH lists the following

Table 1. Fasting Plasma Glucose Test
Plasma Glucose Result (mg/dL) Diagnosis
99 and below Normal
100 to 125 Pre-diabetes
(impaired fasting glucose)
126 and above Diabetes*

Plasma glucose appears to run higher than whole/capillary blood, which home testers use.

I found this site useful for converting between them.

according to that converter, a morning blood sugar with a home tester of 118 is actually equiv. of 132 on the plasma glucose scale. and 105=118 plasma

I read that they lowered the limits because by the time people were getting 140 readings etc, too much damage was already done.
