Default Mother's medical records...

So...this is a really random question...but I'm hoping someone on here might know the answer.

My mother died when I was 14. She was sick with breast cancer for 7 years. I know that she had some issues conceiving, as she left a journal behind about her pregnancy with me....

I was reading through some stuff on here and just got to wondering about what things she was given to help conceive...and if they might have affected me...

My father does not remember much about what she was given.... is there any way I could request a copy of my mother's medical records? Would they even still be around considering she died in 1995?

Thanks in advance.

The records should still be around.

Now I am not sure of what you would have to do in order to get them. Start by calling the Dr she had at the time and the hospital that she was being treated at when she passed away.

They may be dusty and at the bottom of a box in a records room but with some time and effort they should be able to produce something.

Remember it may not be complete; hospitals have really changed how they keep records since then so you may not get much.

The comfort is knowing that if your children decide to find yours it'll be easier.

They may make you pay a fee too.

Being that you are her daughter I don't know if they will give you a hard time, maybe your father may have to sign for them.

Start with a phone call or two and go from there.

You could try, but having your father request them might give you better odds. If you know the doctor who treated her, or hospital she went to for whatever reason, call them and explain your situation, and ask what you'd need to do to get the records (if they still have them- if you're talking about stuff from the 80s, they might be gone).

What year were you born? If your mother was given DES, that would be worth knowing - especially because women with PCOS shouldn't necessarily take bcp's if their mom's were given DES. (I'm a DES daughter...my doctor did NOT ask me about des exposure before Rx-ing bcp's. My body did not like them...)

Didn't they stop using DES in the early 70s? It sounds like she was born in the 80s.

You may have a hard time getting the records if they are from more than 7-10 years ago. Once a person is deceased entities are only required to keep the records for 7 years. You would have better luck getting the from the doctor if he is still in practice, rather than the hospital. However if the doctor is no longer practicing, then the records are only kept 7 years from that date.

ooops, I didn't do the math...not sure when they actually stopped using DES in practice (not just production).

Hmm...sounds like I might be able to get some...but not all...but probably not anything about what I was interested in....don't really care to read about the crap that happened after I was born...I LIVED that. Blah.

Yeah....I was born in 81.....so the DES issue probably won't be something I need to worry about....I'm just interested in knowing what exactly she was given...and what her issues were...the journal is kinda vague about that... just some talk about cysts and discussion of maybe having surgery... but I guess they gave her some type of hormone shots....

Thanks for the info. I figured it would take some searching....just wondering if there was some official channels I needed to go through.

Hey I might be of some help with answering your questions. I work in medical records at a local hospital in my area. We have our charts that go back about 5 years here at the hospital. Then visits that are older than that are at an offsite facility. Recent visits are now electronic and in our computer system. When someone wants their records we order their chart and the visits wanted get copied( some visits go back like 15 years or more!!). There is a fee per page and a release of records form has to be filled out. I would say your dad should try doing that. They may also be able to release them to you too. I think it just depends on each individual person. But I do believe they should have the records. Good luck with everything
Sarah
