Why Some People Quit And Some People Never Give Up
By Tom Venuto
www.burnthefat.com

Over the 18 years that I've been involved in the fitness industry as a personal trainer, nutrition consultant and motivation coach, I've noticed that some people who start a nutrition and exercise program give up very easily after hitting the first obstacle they encounter. If they feel the slightest bit of discouragement or frustration, they will abandon even their biggest goals and dreams.

On the other hand, I noticed that some people simply NEVER give up. They have ferocious persistence and they never let go of their goals. These people remind me of a bulldog that refuses to release its teeth-hold on a bone. The harder you try to pull the bone out of his mouth, the harder the dog chomps down with a vice-like grip.

What's the difference between these two types of people? Psychologists say there is an answer.

An extremely important guideline for achieving fitness success is the concept that, "There is no failure; only feedback. You don't "fail", you only get results."

This is a foundational principle from the field of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and the first time I ever heard it was from peak performance expert Anthony Robbins back in the late 1980's. It's a principle that stuck with me ever since, because it's a very, very powerful shift in mindset.

A lot of people will second-guess themselves and they'll bail out and quit, just because what they try at first doesn't work. They consider it a permanent failure, but all they need is a little attitude change, a mindset change, or what we call a "reframe."

Instead of saying, "This is failure" they can say to themselves, "I produced a result" and "This is only temporary." This change in perspective is going to change the way that they feel and how they mentally process and explain the experience. It turns into a learning opportunity and valuable feedback for a course correction instead of a failure, and that drives continued action and forward movement.

It's all about your results and your interpretation of those results

Dr Martin Seligman, a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, did some incredible research on this subject and wrote about it in his book, Learned Optimism. Dr. Seligman noticed that the difference between people who give up and people who persist and never quit is what he referred to as "explanatory style." He said that explanatory style is the way we explain or interpret bad events or failures.

People who habitually give up have an explanatory style of permanence. For example, they hit a plateau in their progress and explain it by saying, "diets never work" or "I have bad genetics so I'll always be fat." These explanations imply permanence.

Other people hit the same plateaus and encounter the same challenges, but explain them differently. They say things such as, "I ate too many cheat meals this week," or "I haven't found the right diet for my body type yet." These explanations of the results imply being temporary.

People who see negative results as permanent failure are the ones who give up easily and often generalize their "failure" into other areas of their lives and even into their own sense of self. It's one thing to say, "I ate poorly this past week because I was traveling," (a belief about temporary behavior and environment), and to say, "I am a fat person because of my genetics" (a belief about identity with a sense of permanence). Remember, body fat is a temporary condition, not a person!

People who see challenges and obstacles as temporary and as valuable learning experiences are the ones who never quit. If you learn from your experiences, not repeating what didn't work in the past, and if you choose to never quit, your success is inevitable.

Default Biggest loser workout is working

Hi. I'm very new to this board (by about 20 minutes!). I always look on soul cysters but never registered until today. It's time to get some help from those who know the best!

I started working out to the biggest loser workout DVD 1 doing the six week routine and in 8 days I am down 7.8 lbs and 6.5 inches. Of course I have been eating very good too. Fruits and veges and all kinds of new recipes from the bodyflex diet book.

I don't even bother with low carb because I quit every single time...but these recipes seem to be doing the job. I eat plenty each day...sometimes I feel like it's too much. The scale doesn't lie though, and even if it was just water weight...it feels great to have lost 6.5 inches by toning.

Just thought you all might want to know that this worked for me. We are going through IVF currently. Egg retrieval is scheduled for September 30th and my doc said to try and lose a little weight if I could. It feels impossible sometimes with PCOS and Hypothyroid...but every once and a while something comes along that really works.

Thank you for all the information! I've been sending e-mails to personal trainers and other "experts" back home, and have not received one reply to date! This thread has answered so many questions I had. I am grateful.

I cannot SAY how highly I recommend " fitday.com "

It's been a lifesaver for me!!! I've been able to completely track what I've eaten, but it's better than a food diary or journal, because it also monitors the caloric intake! I LOVE IT!!!! Two thumbs WAY up! I've already lost three pounds!!!

I just wanted to say that working out with friends isn't always a motivational factor. I almost quit working out because I have a very slim, fit and gorgeous friend who insists on working out with me.

Even though I know it's stupid, and that she probably doesn't think this way, I always feel like such a failure running so much slower than her on the threadmill, not losing weight etc. Also, I don't think she fully understands how it feels to have PCOS, and how much it can affect your body. Anyway, I quit my gym, and am going to join a better gym shortly, which also lets me work out in my own pace, when I want to/need to, and I think this will be motivational for me! I can't wait to start.

For me, being competitive and a former athlete, I think the best motivation for working out is my own goals, and not comparing myself to other people. I would like to join some kind of team sport, which I used to play when I was younger, but somehow I think that would feel different from working out in a gym next to my "perfect" friend.

Anyone else have issues with work out-buddies?

I need to work out either by myself or with a trainer. If I count on someone and they let me down it is just an excuse for me not to go. Don't forget to weight train too the more muscle you have the more fat you burn. I went to the gym yesterday and now I can't raise my arms above my head ouch. I was doing really well for a long time I lost close to 75 pounds but then I lost my nephew to a horrible accident and well I slipped a little.... actually a lot, I put on up to 35 lbs at one point but I am trying once again and now the gain that I need to lose is down to 30 lbs. 30 more then another 35 but i did it before i can do it again.... and to those of you that think you can't you can just keep your head in it, also try and keep a picture of you at your largest on your fridgerator. wow my spelling is bad.

For all of those TTC.

My personal motivation tool I use when the 'going gets tough' or Im craving a 'naughty' food.

I close my eyes and I begin to picture how my first born baby will look like. His or hers eyes, ears, nose, skin, shape, mouth, hair and even the sounds (crying, coos and laughs).

I NEED and must loose weight in order for me to first be able to conceive and then have the healthiest pregnancy I can. I am the one who has to do this. No one else can do it for me. If Im not going to do and no body can do it for then its not gonna happen. That fact is enough to make me get off my ass and move and eat that celery stick instead of that piece of cake. Im adopted and I REALLY want to meet my first blood relative. I know if I keep to this I will make that dream a reality and I will be able to successfully give birth to my first born child and my first blood relative.

I was just diagnosed with PCOS last week and I'm happy to find SC to help answer so many of my questions.

For the first time in my adult life I think this diagnosis has awakened my motivation to get myself on a positive path to good health.

I also have to concur with SpiritedStar in that being able to successfully conceive and deliver a healthy child or children (I really want twins...lol) has become an added motivation. I suffered a miscarriage in November 2005 and now know why I haven't conceived again. Knowledge is power for me now, so now that I know why I'm not conceiving, I want to make the changes in my health that will make it possible.

I wish you all the best.
