Well, I'm moving from California to London for grad school and I have a few questions for all you UK cysters!
1) I'm taking Metformin and I will have a three month supply with me when I move so I have some time to figure out how to get a new Rx/supply in the UK. Do I get this Rx from my new GP? I'm covered under NHS, so will this Rx cost me anything?
2) Can anyone reccomend any PCOS-frienly GPs in central London?
Thanks in advance! Can't wait to move!

Yes your GP should prescribe it to you, unless you are reffered to a specific specialist (e.g. an endocrinologist). Under the NHS your treatment is free but you will still need to pay for your prescriptions (rx) it's a set amount for each item (not sure if this changes from area to area but it shouldn't do). Sorry not sure what the amount is, I think it's roughly £9, I'll need to check up on that (or you can google it).
Sorry I don't live in London, but I think you will have to pick a surgery near where you live as treatment is dependent on your geographic location. They might automatically allocate you a GP when you join (but you can change) also when you make an appointment you can ask to be treated by a specific doctor who is not your GP if that is your preference (as far as I'm aware). Maybe try asking for a female dr who might be more aware of the PCOS issues?
In my experience GP's tend not to be very educated on the PCOS front. Often I go in to see my GP with information on the meds I want to try (assuming they are avaliable on the NHS). They just don't have the time to sit and research what might work for you so you tend to have to do the legwork (unless they are really up to date with their knowledge). I know things have changed recently and if you will need to be reffered to a specialist if you require fertility related meds (i.e. a reproductive endocrinologist for clomid) etc.
Sorry I couldn't be more help........good luck with the move!! Hope you develop a taste for tea.......LOL
Anyone with any more info??

Hello!! I moved here from Cali! Definitely bring a letter from your current doctor about your pcos it will save you a load of hassle. You will just be assigned a gp once you are here so unless you go private it is very difficult to guarantee you will get someone who is good with pcos. Your best bet would be to get a list of gp surgeries from the local health authority once you know which one you will be under and call each one and ask if they have someone who has a particular speciality and if they are accepting new patients.
In my area I had a really crap gp and swapped. Now my GP is a gyno and is fab!! Very helpful with my pcos and fertility issues. The prescription charge is £7.20 per drug and usually they give you no more than a 1 month supply at a time. So, if you are on met you would basically pay that charge per month for your rx.
Good Luck!! If you have any questions feel free to message me...
