Hello everyone! I am so glad I found this site. I have just started Dr. Berstein's diet because of my weight gain after quitting smoking. Why I quit smoking? To get pregnant! I got married April 1 2005 (yes, April fools day) Went off the pill a month earlier and quit smoking 6 months prior to that. Well, we went at it full force, bbt, ovulation pee tests, ovulation microscope thingy EVERYTHING. Every month I would cry, that is if I even got a period. It has been coming approx. every 33 days, some months I miss it. During this time, my weight went from 180-230lbs. (180lbs is a good comfortable weight for me) My family doctor never mentioned PCOS, just said keep trying, it will work, but sent me to get an ultrasound just in case...it showed nothing, everything was "fine". Recently, I saw the doctor at Dr. Bernsteins, and looking at everything, (blood work normal, not diabetic or boarderline) he suggested I have PCOS and it can be fixed with the diet (for diabetics, helps regulate insulin levels) As I lose weight and my insulin levels change I may be able to properly ovulate. Ask me if I was sooo happy I thought I would CRY!!! So, now my journey begins....lose 60 lbs (my desired weight this time is 170 to get preg) and see if the PCOS can be fixed by diet alone. Unfortunatly, I also have been suffering a terrible depression with the weight gain/quitting smoking and have started smoking again from the stress. (so also have to try and quit again) FUN! Does anyone have a similar story? Any comments? suggestions? I'll need them because I think I am driving my husband, friends family NUTS with my "problems" hahahaha Hope you guys understand.

Welcome to SC! For each cyster what works is different. Some ovulate only on Metformin (a diabetes drug used off label for PCOS and/or ovulation), others do with diet and exercise. Please check out the Trying To Conceive board. PCOS is a syndrome, and for many it cannot be "fixed" though the symptoms can be managed with diet, exercise and for many meds.
I also finally quit smoking completely. I completely understand the ups and downs. You quit because your TTC , but then get depressed because you didn't get pg and start smoking again. Its a vicious cycle! I did the same thing and struggled with staying smoke free. You can get past it! I wish you luck on quitting and TTC. I just started taking met. I also usually had a cycle nearly every month, since I have been on the met my cycles have shortened in length from 40 now to 32 and are only lasting 5 days! woo hoo !!
I just wanted to encourage you a little. For everyone it is different, but I did get pregnant from diet and exercise. My cousin has pcos too, and she also got pregnant with both of her kids by watching her carbs. So give it a shot, and hopefully you will get the good news you're wanting soon. I know how it hurts to want a baby so bad.
