Sarah i didn't know if i ovulated till i started checking the cervical position along with the cervical mucus(and that that takes a long time to learn) and used OPK's too (ovulation predictor kit), but those don't work for cysters with high LH! , some watch for their BBT(body basal temperature and chart) but i've never done it before! i hope you'll find a method that suits you the best to detect ovulation!
JazakAllah for your advices and consolations. I guess you're right about gaining "muscle mass" vs. plain fat.
I've been placed back on BCPs for two months to get my cycle in order. TTC is just going farther away from me, it seems.
Sisters, I have my visa interview for the US next week. Please, please, please pray for me! I am scared that because of my hijab and life spent in the Middle East, they'll throw me in for the never-ending background check. Right now our family thinks we are using protection and plan on having a baby once we are in the US. If I, God forbid, get thrown in for the background check, everyone will be on our case, forcing us to have a baby already!
Please do not worry about your Hijab. I am an American who covers as well and in America its much different. This is not France or other European countries who prohibit a woman from wearing hijab to go to school or other things. All that is AGAINST the law in the US. This is what makes the US the best country (and I'm not just saying it because I'm American) because it allows you your right to practice your religion (i.e. wearing hijab). I've worked with Hijab and am going to graduate school with my hijab. I have American friends and I go shopping without any issues or problems or any harassments. Good luck with your interview though! let us know how it goes.
Assalamu Alaikum sister
Thank you so much for providing the thread. I did go through it all. However I have bunch of questions most of which are a bit TMI .. I dont know if I should be asking them openly, so i'll start with a couple normal one's lol
I am not married yet and in our family we dont talk about TTC and everything that openly. I am 21 and still considered too young to know all of this. I hope I can get some help here
1.How would I know that I ovulated?
2.If I am not mistaken does it mean that concieving is done when you ovulate? therefore it means you have regular periods?
3.Everyone on the thread mentioned about TTC , so is taking soy at the moment not the best option for me or it doesnt have any relation with TTC?
4.I dont know how people do the charting for cycle days (CD) but I really want to do it and be aware of all the things that my crazy body is doing.
I have loads and loads of question but I dont know how to put them in words.
Jazaak' Allah for answering
Hi Sara. Don't be embarassed about what God has allowed a woman to do. I'm sorry that things are not open in your family (I went through the same thing). Please feel free to ask us all your questions and we will do our best to help. If you are embarassed you can send me a private message if you'd like. To answer your questions:
1. There are lots of ways to know if you've ovulated. Some women have a bit of pain on their side mid-way through their cycle. Others look at mucus which lets them know. You can also track your body temp by taking your temp each day in the morning before you actually get out of bed. You'll see a spike when you ovulate. This is not always 100% because things like being sick when you ovulate (like having a fever because you have the flu) can throw that off. Also if you're like me, I totally forget to do it. Lastly, there are ovulation kits that you urine on each day and when you ovulate it'll show a positive result. I'm guessing the last one won't work for your because your still not married and your parents probably would get upset if they see you purchasing these things.
2. If you ovulate and the egg that is released is fertilized by the man's sperm within 12-24 hours after it is released, you are pregnant. That's conception. You can ovulate and not get pregnant (if you and your husband don't do it at the right time). Regular periods do not mean you're ovulating (you can still get your period each month without releasing an egg). Some women ovulate mid-cycle, but that's not always the case. When I was pregnant with my daughter, the egg was released 5 weeks after my last period. That's one of the issues with PCOS.
3. Some people are taking soy instead of Clomid (meds to make a woman ovulate so she can get pregnant). If you're not trying to concieve (since you're not married) you won't have to worry about that. Although soy is very natural and many people eat it (like in soy bean form) as regular food. It couldn't hurt!!!
4. You can look up all the basal body temp charts online. Just type that into google. It'll give you a chart to print out as well as tell you how to use the chart to track your body.
I hope these answers help and remember we will be here to answer anything you have to ask. :^)
I came to throw good news inshallah. I think I ovulated yesterday, I felt the twinging pain as well. Pray for me sisters. I am so happy , I ovulated on cd19 the first time since high school . InsaAllah this is the month for us. I need prayers.
Peace

If you read in the Research Articles forum, there is a new article about Vitamin D deficiency possibly being linked to PCOS and infertility. I know many of us wear hijab and don't get a lot of sun exposure, so it would be a good idea to look into this and discuss it with your doctor. A good way to increase your intake is through fish or vitamins.

In Nov 2004 I had intense pain in my tummy (I dont know its medical terminology) with vomiting. We rushed to the hospital there my doctor gave me some test which diagnosed me with PCOS. She gave me medicines (I don't remember their names), but my cysts size increased instead of decreasing. Then she gave me some hormones which I didn't take bcoz my mother was not satisfied with that doctor. We switched to another doctor she gave me contraceptives, I took them almost for 6 months, my U/S reports getting better, but due to some problem I didn't go for my last U/S, and neither I visited my gyneo. Now after 4 years I again feel light pain in my tummy plus back pain problems. On Nov 11 I had another intense pain in my tummy which is a worst pain I ever had plus vomiting. Now I have pre-menstural bleeding problems as well (Since 6 to 8 months). Now I have feeling that I have more severe PCOS. Here I want to know some answers:
like does PCOS come again? am I thinking right that I may have PCOS again. My mother thinks it may be appendix but I am not agreed with her.
As I took contraceptives 4 years ago, I know it has some side effects and can cause infertility, is it true as I am unmarried and this thought make me insane some times.
As Nomadic said that I can jump into treatment immediately after marriage but it makes me scares as well because as you know In Pakistan, most of the people thinking is very different, they think that women can have problems in ovary only after marriage (due to unawareness obviously), and if my husband to be come to know all these and think very differently then what will happen ??
I know I am insane and think excessively but all these thought make me insane actually.

PCO and PCOS are two different things even if they sound the same. Poly-cystic-ovaries is a symptom which anyone can develop, with or without PCOS, with or without any disorder, whereas PCOS is a syndrome, Polycystic ovarian syndrome, a whole combination of symptoms which does not go away, symptoms may heal, but the whole syndrome does not go away. So it is better to get a good diagnosis of whether you just have got polycystic ovaries or whether you have the complex syndrome with all the symptoms including the ultrasound look of polycystic ovaries.
Good luck and salams

You're welcome Fifa,
I am not a doctor in any ways, but from what I know just normal woman without PCOS may develop polycystic ovaries. You need to have other symptoms and go through lab tests to get a diagnosis of PCOS. Any hormonal imbalance? Anovulation, that is, lack of ovulation? Irregularities of menstruation and ovulation? Weightgain, especially excess fat stored around waist instead of hips, apple-shaped body? Type two diabetes or insulin resistance? Hairloss, usually male type? Hair growth in places where it shouldn't be? There are symptoms like these associated with PCOS. So you better go get checked by a good ob-gyn.
InshaAllah yours is just cysts on ovaries which can easily go away and do not come back, even if not so, it is possible to live a perfectly normal, unaffected and good, healthy life with PCOS as well. Getting diagnosed properly should be the priority.
Ma'a Salam

Salaam everyone, I am new to Soulcysters, but I am really glad that you guys are here. It's great motivation to see people in our faith and others working to support and help everyone out. I'm PCOS and trying to concieve...My doctors is starting me on provera and then clomid if I get a period. So, please do keep me in your prayers!
Fifa Khan- Birth control pills do not cause infertility. Many people (including my sister and best friend) got pregnant on birth control and they had been taking it for years!!! I know that this 'ideal' is around in many Arab and Muslim countries, although I have no idea why people feel they are doctors and can just throw out information such as this. Are you going to a good (reputable) doctor? If so, listen to them and your gut feeling and not your mother (unless your mother went to medical school). My mother constantly tells me "oh your doctor doesn't know what she's talking about", even though my doctor is the best in the area for PCOS and my mother..well she's an Arabic teacher. I just let my mother talk and then still follow doctors orders. I also want to tell you something, you said you are afraid of this problem because you are unmarried and worried about some future husband. PCOS is something you will have for the rest of your life. You can get rid of the cycts maybe but you'll always have this condition. If you are going to marry someone who's going to judge you on going to the doctor before being married for 'female problems' you don't need this type of husband in your life. You're going to need someone who will support you no matter what and one who is accepting of the fact that perhaps you might not be able to bear children. A husband like that will make your life happy, anything else and he'll make your life hell. Since you are not tied to anyone you do not need to make a sacrifice, like our sisters who have husbands like these since they are already married. Find someone who will love you and love your problem. Good luck to you sister.
