Unhappy My 30 year old friend having a hysterectomy…

My 30 year old friend having a hysterectomy…

A friend of mine that I met at Curves has to have a total hysterectomy… She has already had one ovary removed, and he has seemingly gone through an early menopause. There is no way she could ever have children, and she is in severe pain, so this seems to be the only option.

My questions, to any of you who have had a hysterectomy, are:
1) Did you go on hormone replacement?
2) How long was your recovery time?
3) Did this help your other PCOS symptoms?
4) Did you sex life change? For the better? For the worse?
5) How did you cope knowing that you could never have a child?

Thank you… She is putting on a happy face, but is obviously very upset. I would just like to offer to her that there are others out there that can give her support.

I'm sorry I don't know the answers to your questions, but I just wanted to say that I am so sorry for your friend. Please tell her that and I will be praying for her. Also, I can't remember it right now, but I know that I have seen other ladies on here post before about a website for support for ppl that have had to have hysterectomies, so maybe someone can post that and you can give her the link to check it out and ask any questions that she has, get advice, support, etc. I wish her the best...and I will be praying for her to get through this tough time.

As for coping w/out children? Don't know the answer to that either...I'm afraid that I'm going to have to face that possiblity myself. Have they considered adoption? Is it possible for her to adopt (money wise and all that?). Just a thought...not that it's any of my business.

I can tell you my mom had a hysterectomy (she was older though...in her late 40's I think) and she hasn't had too many problems. She was put on estrogen for a while, but her new doc took her off of it since she had cancer and that increases the risk apparently. She says the estrogen really did help and she misses it...but I guess her biggest problem is w/vaginal dryness. And she also for some reason gets more yeast infections now (though that might have more to do w/her sugar levels since she's diabetic...I don't know all the facts sorry). I also can't remember how long it took her to recover, it was years ago. I want to say it took a couple weeks for the major healing, and then 6 to 8 weeks or so before she was back to normal. But, she was in a lot of pain before the surgery, and even right after, she said the pain from the surgery and incision wasn't half as bad as the pain she was in before. Don't know how much any of that helps but hopefully it does a little.

Again, I will definitely be praying for your friend. Hope all goes well and it will at least take her physical pain away, and that she will get through the emotional pain, w/a little support from friends like you. Hugs to her, and you as well!

I would really be interested in talking to your friend.

I would have specific questions for her as to what kind of pain, duration and other symptoms.

My questions, to any of you who have had a hysterectomy, are:
1) Did you go on hormone replacement? Yes, but only for a few months.
They seemed to cause the "menapausal" symptoms.

2) How long was your recovery time? If you mean the immediate"return to work" recovery...I took 8 weeks off from work because of the type of work I do(On feet 8 hrs, heavy lifting, bendingand twisting.
Over all...It can take up to 2 years to actualy "feel better".
It has been 2 years and I am just coming out of the fog of illness.

3) Did this help your other PCOS symptoms? Depends on symptoms.
It only took care of the diseased ovarys that prob started the hormone imbalance. But I also had a condition called Adneomyosis(sp) It is a form of Endometreosis that attackes the inner walls of the uteris and causes uterine muscle cramping almost constantly. That giving no relief to pain. AF became so painful and BCP's made AF worse instead of better.

4) Did you sex life change? For the better? For the worse? This is a multi level answer. I was in so much discomfort before surgery, I cringed with the thought of having sex. Then the first 2 years after surgery, I was so dry, I had little erge to want it. Now 2 years post op, I am finally getting the erge back and have no time with DH to do anything about it.

5) How did you cope knowing that you could never have a child?
I can't answer this question myself because I was lucky to have one son.
But of the women in my life I know personally, it is a hard issue to face. Some do better than others. Most can not face baby showers, or even the discussion of one. I do know that counseling should be taking seriously. This surgery is life altering and once done, you can't go back. It is like having a loss in your life. But then I tell myself with out the surgery I would have been crippled with pain for most likely the rest of my life. So now, I don't have the monthly AF pain. But I do have scar tissue discomfort. But that too can be eased with physical therapy every now and then.

I have several links in my siggy that covers this topic.
I hope you take the time to read them and share the info with your friend.

Patty
