Default My brother and sisters father is dying please pray for him....

I just got home from the hospital. My 19 and 20 year old brother and sister father is dying. He was my stepfather for 12 years

He's in ICU right now in a coma. His liver and kidneys have failed and he's on dialisis (sp?).. His heart is enlarged and he has sepsis (sp? a blood infection) . He also needs heart surgery but he's too unstable. He is also on a resirator because he can no longer breath on his own. He started forgetting who people were a couple days ago and its gone down from there to the point that the doctors don't think he'll make it to monday and tonight he was given last rights..Unfortunatly my 20 year old sister has to make the final decison on what to do for him if it comes to that.
..So please pray for him to make a miraculous recovery. He's gravely ill and needs a miracle... Thank you ...

thanks ladies. He has gotten worse and is now in complete organ failure. We found out from a nurse, kinda off the books that the hosptial actually found him face down in his bed and he aspirated vomit into his lungs.. So now he has pnemonia.. He was scheduled for open heart surgery today but he won't survive it and his pancreas has ruptured but they can't take it out so I don't know what they're doing about that... We are all very surprised he made it through the night but the doctors are confident he will not make it to the end of the week.... Its just so sad becasue my mother isn't there , and hasn't been for my brother and sister even though she lives 2 hours away and their father was the only one who cared and was there for them and he's only 54 years old so he's young... This year has just sucked I think.. I'm ready for it to be over..

So the latest news is he's now in congestive heart failure.... He has exploritory surgery just a camera down his throat to his heart to see if they can even do any surgery on him tomorrow.. All his organs continue to fail and he had to have another blood transfusion today.. second one...they dont' know where the blood is going to but he's loosing blood. The nurse said she was washing him yesterday and his liver is so gone that he's seeping blood through his skin.... Its just hard.. My sister and I have discussed stopping treatment. I'm more apt to do it only because my issue is IF and thats a big if he pulls through, what is his quality of life afterwards... How long are we talking? A year, 6 months etc.. Are we talking constant hospice care? If thats the fact then I dont' think he'd want that at all. On top of that, we do all this and he's in a coma and might not wake up anyways. Plus he'd have to be on dyalisis for the rest of his life PLUS he needs a liver transplant.. His liver has no function. IMO whats the point?.Is that harsh or realistic? I feel like in a time like this emotion has to be put aside and a realistic true view of someones potential life had to be thought hard about.

Its just a confusing situation and never thought we'd have to choose whether someone lives or dies.. I esp didn't want this for them because they're so young. I dunno.. lots to think about..lots and lots these next couple days.

Bree I am so sorry about your mother.... its so terrible. I can honestly say I know how u must have felt.. Although have to make that decision about your own mother is a whole new level.. its terrible.. I hate reality.

Praying for him and your family. When my father was dying our pastor told us it's best to ask yourself if you are prolonging life, or are you prolonging death. That helped give us peace when we came to the point there was nothing to do to help my Dad survive and we could say goodbye to him without guilt or what ifs. I hope it helps you, too.

My mother passed on Wednesday night. I know what you're going through. I'm actually writing her eulogy right now. Her funeral is tomorrow. She too was very young. She was 59. My brother and I are 24 and 26. It is very difficult, but remember that when he passes his suffering ends as well.

thank you all. It was very tramatic for me.. His passing was not easy. The doctor expected him to live no more than a couple mins and certainly not more than hour.. He lasted almost 30 hours off life support.

We specifically asked he be coma induced, they did not do that, he actually woke up, was looking around and aswering questions via blinking his eyes.. They had him on so much morphine they said they don't know how he's awake and how its pretty much not killing him. He even tried to move around in the bed and get out. My sister was tramatized and freaked out, becasue it was like watching the living dead literally. We demanded they put him to sleep and finally they did..

His breathing was terrible and congested and he was gasping a lot. His body was filling with fluid and his lung could not expell the fluid so he would cough and the fluid would get stuck in his throat and he would choke and gasp and shake and ugh it was bad. I believe they call it the death rattle..

Then he started to stop breathing for seconds at a time, then only breathing a couple mins at a time.. He was sweating terribly from having to work so hard to breath and eventually he would not breath for over 30 seconds then take 1 or two shallow breaths.. The doctor told us he can survive like that for up to 10 days without food or water. After talking with the doc we made the choice to all run home and shower and come back as it did not seem he was exactly leaving that min... 15 mins after everyone left he passed with the nurse in the room on Saturday... It was terrible and I hope I never have to watch someone die that kind of terrible suffering death again.

Im so sorry for you loss Margy.. I can truly say I know what it feels like and its a terrible feeling.. I hope for peace for you and your brother

My hearts breaks that you and your family had to go through that! I was with my grandfather when he passed in 2001, and stayed with my grandma for days of hospice when she was dying last year. With my grandpa we did home hospice (basically a nurse came once a day, the rest was up to the family). It was horribly traumatic for all of us. He lived 24 days without food and 17 days without water (too sick to eat or drink), and was in and out of consciousness for days. It was literally one of the worst experiences of my life. Then, last December, just before Christmas, my grandma got sick. She was admitted to the hospital and continued to deteriorate. She made the choice to not be hooked to a vent, so she was moved to hospice (in hospital). They were wonderful to our family and it was better than being at home. But, it was still long and drawn out. The doctor said she would live a day or two at most, and she ended up living several days, finally passing 1/1/08. I left and went home at 430AM because I couldn't take anymore, and she passed at 8AM.

Going through that changes who you are, I think. You and your siblings are in my thoughts and prayers!
