I used to live in BC, but have moved way east, so unfortunately I won't be able to meet up.
However, I can answer your question about passports and the border. You do not need a passport, but you may need some photo ID (drivers license is fine.) The last few times I've crossed over to the states and back, they didn't even ask for ID, just asked what citizenship we were. But to be on the safe side, definitely have ID with you!
