My 17 year old daughter was just diagnose with pcos. Her doctor put her on the pill and told us there was nothing to worry about until she decides to have children. What do we do?
I disagree with that. I was diagnosed at 15, but had been on BCP since shortly before my 13th birthday. Birth control did not get my periods straight, but it does for many people. Birth control can mask the symptoms of PCOS and when they come off of them they have worse symptoms than ever before. I feel that if I had found effective treatment before getting to the point of trying to have a baby that I might not have suffered the way I did. Some treatments include insulin desinsitizers (sp?) like metformin. Another treatment is low carb dieting. I've had luck with both, but metformin really bothers my stomach. However, most people find the side effects of metformin go away after a week or two.
Please read the research articles posted here. It's important to be informed about all your options before making a decision, especially when you are trying to help your child. The single most important component in fighting PCOS is your physician. It's important that your doctor is very knowlegeable about PCOS. You might concider taking her to an endo or even an RE, if you haven't already.
I would find a new doctor, maybe try an endocrinologist. Some docs think that PCOS is only a reproductive issue but there is a lot more to it than that. PCOS has other components and puts you at a higher risk for things like diabetes. It is something that needs to be managed properly now. I wish that my PCOS had been diagnosed and managed early on. If it had I don't think that my body would be as out of control as it is now. The syndrome generally worsens over time so the earlier you do something about it the better. Good luck!

I agree with the above posters.
Diet and exercise can really help to keep the symptoms at bay too. When I first started having trouble I didn't know and by the time I found out what was wrong with me I had gained 100 lbs. in one year and had many other side effects that could have possibly been prevented.
Metformin worked great for me and I just started teh Met XR (extended release) b/c this time round it hurts my stomach. I am also taking Yasmin for birth control right now and it is helping with some of my issues.
I also got pregnant after 4 years of trying by taking Metformin both times. I recommend either taking in some articles for your doctor or finding one who knows more about this.
Good Luck!
ETA: Metformin also started my periods back and to a normal state after I lost them.

I agree with all the other cysters. It doesn't sound like your daughter's doc knows alot about PCOS. Did she go to a GP or an endo? If not the latter i'd seriously recommend that you take her to an endo, they are usually the best people to help with this. And don't rest untill you get a doc that really listens and is willing to help. (Alot of doc's just stuff bc pills in your hand and send you on your merry way ~ makes me soo mad)
I wasn't dx until my early 20's and it would have made a world of difference to me if it had been sooner. I agree that diet + exercise can and will make a HUGE difference with her PCOS. Maybe you and her can also check out the teen forum on the board? Then she can chat to girls her own age that are also dealing with this?
{{{HUGS}}} to you and her!

~I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once~
I have a couple of questions, 1) is your daughter within a "normal" weight range? 2) Does your daughter show any signs of depression? 3) Does she show any of the other symptoms of PCOS? taking all of these things into consideration, i would definately find a new doc. (there's a great section here dedicated to letting you know of Dr.'s in your area) Secondly if she is not within a "normal" weight range then try a low carb diet (like the south beach diet). Also if she shows signs of depression try and help her through it. I know that it can be a scary thing to go through alone that young.
I agree with the other cysters... I was on B/c and when I went off them I ended up not having any periods for almost 2 years with out the assistance of provera, I also gained 100lb before I was fianally DX and put on Metformin to control my pcos. I would definatley see about going to another doctor !
