Question My daughter's strange acne

My daughter is almost 11 and she is going through puberty and she is taking after me as far as the pcos goes.Lately she is breaking out with acne on her face that is your typical acne but her scalp(hairline area)is covered in little tiny bumps that dont seem to be fluid filled and she is very embarressed by this.I have tried buying different shampoos for her but nothing seems to help.Any suggestions? This acne is in her hairline near her forehead. It is very bad.It looks like milia without the whiteheads kind of like clogged pores. Her scalp also feels grainy if you touch it.It feels like sand is in her hair follicles and she showers everyday and scrubs her scalp. This is very stubbern stuuf that is not responding to alot of the stuff we tried.

frenchie, here's a suggestion. My husband had these little pimples on his scalp and our hair stylist suggested a different shampoo: It's called Nioxin. You can buy it at certain hair salons or stores that carry salon products for less.

He started using the Nioxin shampoo and scalp therapy and it's made a world of difference. According to the scientists at Nioxin, the regular shampoos clog hair follicles causing these bumps. He doesn't have them anymore.

If this doesn't work try going to a dermatologist for some sort of medicated shampoo. But I bet the Nioxin will work. I use it too and my scalp feels a lot cleaner. Let me know if it works.

Here's their web site: http://www.nioxin.com

Default something I just went through...

I don't know if this is related, but I recently went though a bout of very weird acne on my chest and neck that made me think about your daughter. Mine actually ended up being a fungal infection of my hair follicles. In discussing this with my derm, he indicated that sometimes people will get this along their foreheads and in their hairlines. My derm has a heavy asian accent and it is difficult for me to understand him sometimes, so I don't have the first part of the medical term for what my breakout was, but it definately was ___________ folliculitis. He gave me a antifungal oral med called sporanox to take for 2 wks. Hope this helps. My little bumps were red at first and then filled with a small amount of white puss like stuff.

Default To kelly....

....it's Pityrosporum folliculitis I think. I had the same thing and my derm suggested that I try Nizoral shampoo on the affected area.....leave it on for a minute or two and then rinse off. After 10 days of this, I was completely clear. I was also to shampoo my hair with it occasionally. Now, I just use it once a week (if I remember!)

If this hadn't have worked, he would have moved to an oral anti-fungal.

I get something that is similar. I get the bumps on my arms, hair line, scalp, upper chest area just below my neck, any areas that I don't protect from the sun. For me it seems to be some sort of reaction to the sun. They aren't acne, and they itch. As long as I keep sun block on or keep my skin covered I don't seem to get them. Just wanted to share that with you in case the above doesn't work out for you.

Burbuhas, i get this too from the sun. I use aloe vera gel on it and it clears it up.
