Question My doc changed my Met to Gluc XR... Question

Hi ladies!

I hope someone can help me. I have been on Metformin about a year. I was taking 500mg x3 times a day with meals. So, I was taking 1500mg.

Well, I saw my doctor today and complained that I sometimes missed taking my met because its hard to remember. I told her that my sis (who also has PCOS and sees another doc) is on Glucophage XR and takes it only at night with dinner.

So, she did change my Met to Gluc XR, but the dose is only 750mg. Is Gluc stronger then Met? Why would my dosage be reduced by that much? Also, is Gluc better then Met?

Thanks in advance ladies!

Is your prescription 1 pill twice a day? And to answer your question to my knowladge they are the same strength, with it being 750mg I would think she wants to take it twice a day. If its not on your prescription bottle I would call and ask about the change.

Call your doc. The dosage for the XR should be the same as for the regular.

There is a Met ER that your doc could have prescribed that is much cheaper than the Gluc XR, but maybe your doc wanted to see if the Gluc made a difference. There have been some cysters posting here that they didn't do as well with the Met ER as with Gluc XR, but for others it has been fine. There isn't supposed to be a difference in the active med that they both contain, just in the fillers.

I have been on regular Met for over two years. I have an appt. with my doc for this Thurs., and I plan to ask him to switch me to Gluc XR. My weight loss has been agonizingly slow these days, and I want to see if changing to Gluc XR makes a difference. My morning blood sugars are also consistently higher than the rest of the day for me (I'm diabetic), and I want to see if taking the XR helps with that as well.

No, my bottle says take one tablet by mouth every day. Its 30 pills also, not 60, like it ought to be if I took it twice a day.

I don't want to lose the affectiveness of my Met for the convience of taking only one pill a day. I'll call tomorrow and figure this out. I'll let ya know. Thanks ladies.

I went from 2000mg of Met to 500 mg of Gluc XR and its been great. No side effects and the same result. Thats only 500mg once a day. My doctor said they are finding that the XR works as well at a lower dose. Maybe its because it releases better and more consistently? don't know, just what I was told And my lab work is pretty good!

I called my doc this morning and her nurse just got back to me this afternoon. She said that the Glucophage XR is stronger and that's why she cut my dose in half. I dunno if this true, so when I go back on May 5th, I'll ask this question of my doctor directly.

Thanks for your help ladies!
