Default Is my doctor doing enough? Should I switch (again?)

Long story, which I'll try to make short.

About 6 years ago, i was diagnosed with "the syndrome ..." insulin resistance, Sydrome X, whatever you want to call it. I ended up seeing an endo, who prescribed 2000 mg of Met, Synthroid and eventually, cholesterol meds.

This doctor NEVER did hormone tests, implied that they were not effective and might not be covered by my insurance.

Over the years, I have seen my periods go wonky again ... I attributed this to getting less and less consistent about taking my meds due to a severe financial meltdown. Meanwhile, I have NEVER seen an increase in the hair on my head nor a decrease on the hair on my neck and lip. I have also lost, then gained and kept, at least 50 pounds. (Part of this was due to trying, then abandoning, a low carb diet.) Also, the fluid retention in my legs has never been addressed, probably because my blood pressure has not been high enough to justify another med.

I've recently changed doctors ... the new doc seems to be doing more tests than the endo did, but my insulin has not been checked for some time ... and my hormones have NEVER been checked.

I should probably mention that I am not trying to conceive.

In short ... I am wondering if my doctor is doing enough. Also, wondering, based on what I am reading here, if the met is doing more harm than good.

Advice? Info to share with my doc? All are welcome.

Hey Di

Well your docs definitely should
run blood tests, they are definitely necessary to get an accurate diagnosis. I would insist they do them!

I guess I should clarify:

Doctor 1) Low Carb Nazi (I suspected she was gathering info for a book ... really bad bedside manner.) Did a 5 hour glucose tolerance test and insulin levels. Also a metabolic panel. Totally ignored the results from those tests!

Doctor 2) The Endo. Did metablc panel and thyroid tests every six months. Checked glucose levels, cholesterol, thyroid and other stuff. But no insulin levels or hormone tests.

Doctor 3: The GP: From the long list of bloodwork, seemed to do way more tests than the endo. Included a metabolic panel, CBC, iron and thyroid ... Still no insulin levels or homone tests. Was told to take iron supplements. They are repeating the tests in late October.

I guess I'm wondering WHICH tests I should request on top of the ones done already ...
