I went to my doctor to be put on met, and she did some fasting bloodwork. She was almost CERTAIN it was my thyroid (which *suprise suprise* it wasn't). I was diagnosed EIGHT years ago. BUT my doctor did the labs and said my fasting blood glucose was normal at 97, and wouldnt put me on met. But from what i have been reading she should have done a fasting INSULIN test and a glucose/ insulin test. Am I wrong? Also I told her I was ttc and she put me on spiro... which i read i shouldnt be on if i am ttc. Is she a moron or am i just a little confused? HELP!

Hey. You poor thing! I am not an expert but I have had my PCOS care overlooked and put aside for many years. It was finding this site and meeting another woman with PCOS that pushed me to find a specialist in PCOS. It sounds to me like you need to see another Dr. Where in FL are you? Are you near Jacksonville? There is a Center for PCOS in Jacksonville and I know women drive hours just to see the Dr's there. That's where I go and I highly recommend them. I am still knew to PCOS care (since I wasn't really treated prior to) but was diagnosed almost 4 yrs ago!
PS - I passed all my bloodwork too. Even the fasting-insulin-glucose (whatever) test. My testosterone was in the "normal" range as well but the facial hair on my chin tells me differently! I have just started taking Flutamide for that. I did have an ultrasound of my ovaries and tiny cysts were all over them.
Some doctors are idiots but most of them are probably not intentionally so. No one person can know everything about every condition.
I've found it's helpful to challenge a doctor with information that you have... even print out information from credible websites and take it with you.
A good doctor will take the time to read it and do more research on their own if they don't know how to help you. A bad doctor will dismiss it or pretend they know everything. I've found that it's a good way to tell when it's time to change doctors.
Your doc is a moron - many are, esp with conditions like PCOS (the medical community has spent countless hours debating the existence of PCOS and of IR). What my doc did was test my hormone levels - testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen - in my blood. But, yes, I had to challenge, insist on these tests, and be a general PITA - unfortunately in today's medical climate, you're really the only one in your corner, so you need to be armed with information and stand up for yourself. Good luck!

It took me 8 years to have my Dr put my back on gluc after I was unable to afford the specialist who would prescribe it to me any longer. After 8 years I think she finally did enough research that she finally felt comfortable having me on it. That was the feeling I got was she didn't feel like she was comfortable doing so, not that it wasn't what I needed but that she wasn't comfortable managing it. For me this is nothing new, I am so used to answering questions and explaining PCOS and yes half the time it is to Dr's and nurses. When I was first diagnosed about 9 years ago I had a real bad spell of illnesses and was often in the hospital. After I had been seen by enough Dr and nurses and explained it enough I guess I got everyone talking and I'd say PCOS and I'd get "oh yes I was told about that...you must be the lady ." As much as it was wierd I was kind of glad that people were learning about it expcailly in medical feild.

another lady on the boards was nice enuf to inform me that spiro is a no no when ttc or pg. i thought it would be ok right up until getting pg but i knew it blocked testosterone so i figured i would have to stop as soon as i get pg, and my fnp told me to up it, but the other poster said it needs a month or two to get out of your system. so i stopped, and when i went to the gyn thurs she said the same thing, so i would def think about taking that if you r actively ttc.
also i have been to alot of drs, endos, gyns and i have never had any testing done as far as hormone levels. all i got when i was dx was some bloodwork (which may have been hormone tests) and a vag u/s to confirm. the first endo to give me met, i had to beg, he was worried about liver enzymes(duh, i have pcos) but since then anytime i ask for it they give. my fnp her daughter has pcos, and she gets on me if i quit the met. have you ever took it before? it sounds like maybe your dr is not as up on pcos as she should be and maybe you should look around for someone else.
PS I have never taken any blood sugar, fasting insulin tests of any kind. i do not know for sure if i am IR but i am assuming i am b/c i have symptoms of it, are they supposed to do those tests before rxing met?

i thought they were.. when i first got diagnosed at 15 i had ALL sorts of tests done and then forced to go on bcps. i was still very much a virgin and felt weird about being on it at 15. I was always alittle overweight but it wasnt bad.. then when i moved to fl 5 years ago after being on bcp for 3 years, i went off of them only to gain 70 pounds in the first year. I always thought it had something to do with the bcps. I have never been on met but only becausei have only heard about the use of them for pcos on the message boards here. I have NEVER been told about them from my doctors. My doctor wouldnt put me on them but said maybe my new doctor she referred me to would.. and that they most likely will put me on clomid. Im very hopeful.
