My Mood: Points: 8,307.49 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 8,307.49 | Is my dosage considered high? Hi ladies. I was just diagnosed and started met today. My doc is starting me on 1000 mg (1 500 mg pill twice a day) and then after one week increasing me to 2000 mg (2 500 mg pills twice a day). From what I'm reading on here, this seems like a high dosage. I'm worried my body will have a harder time adjusting if I'm starting out too high. Is it normal to start this high right off the bat? I am TTC. |

And there are those that have started as high as 1000mg.
But it's advisable that in order to adjust to the side effects, it's best to start low (500mg) and gradually work your way up in dosage.
But each woman responds differently to the dosage, so you may not see any side effects at 1000mg or you may not see any at all.
But 500mg is generally the standard for first time Metformin users. |

I'm not sure why my doc started me so high when 500 mg seems to be the norm. And it seems like most people go to 1500 mg max and my doc is putting me on 2000 mg max. I'm just confused! |

Some women's bodies respond to 1500mg while others respond to 2000mg. It's not uncommon for a woman to be on 2000mg of Metformin. I've seen quite a few on here that have been on that much before. I've even seen some on 2500mg.
So don't worry too much about that.
Your dr just may be thinking you'll get faster results if you start out on a higher dose than normal. That's my thinking. You just have to see how your body reacts to it as to whether or not you need to reduce the dosage. |

My Mood: Points: 4,293.26 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 4,293.26 | I started at 1000 mg. I'm in my 2nd week - and still standing hehe. Now my RE told me that he has patients at as high as 2500 mg, but 500 - 1000 mg is ok to start with. I'd talk with your doctor if you are having rough symptoms adjusting.
