I just started taking SP yesterday. I have excess facial hair, but I'm pretty sure I'm not losing hair on my head. I use Sam's Club Member's Mark Standardized Saw Palmetto.... You get 350 160 mg softgels for about $14!

Not diagnosed with PCOS, seeking second opinion, once I get health insurance.

I believe the answer is NO you likely should not take it while TTC because it you take anything that blocks androgens/male hormones (the production of androgens or androgens at the cellular receptor site) you risk harm to a male fetus.

As far as medications and herbs for lowering androgens while TTC/pregnant I think the only thing you can possibly do is use products (that are also otherwise safe for TTC and pregancy) that improve insulin sensitivity and therefore normalize androgen levels indirectly by reducing the amount of insulin the ovaies are exposed to. That is probably a frustrating answer because for some women with PCOS it seems that insuin sensitizing medication and other means of controling insulin resistance are not effective enough at controling androgen levels.

Yikes! I just wanted to 'bump' Chaucerg's question - cellulite and weight gain (if true) cellulite and weight gain would be real deal killers for me! Again, Yikes!

I was going to start taking it, then I read that it might make birth control less effective so I changed my mind

This is what PCOS hell...it's a vicious circle of horrible symptoms...

Here's my issue (amongst hundreds) I want to eventually TTC within 1-3 years, but body hair makes intimacy problematic sometimes...so you figure aaahhh Saw palmetto will help with the hair...and then you read this...I guess the Spearmint Tea will pose the same issue with the androgens and the male fetus....Aye yai yai!

I just started a new natural remedy regimine...and now I'm thinking that I should discontinue the saw pal...I even read a warning about evening primrose, which also helps with excess body hair apparently...I'm not sure if I am on the right train, but on the wrong track in preparation for TTC.

here's what I'm on:
Red Raspberry Leaf (capsules)
Chasteberry Vitex
Saw Palmetto
Evening Primrose softgels (and oil for skin)
B complex w/folic acid
Spearmint Tea (did not start yet)
Metformin (1500 mg)

I understand your concerns with Saw Palmetto, but if you aren't gonna start TTC for another "1-3 years", how about continuing SP until you're ready to start TTC....there's no reason to let your hormone/hair issue get any worse...

Just my opinion.

Thanks Kirah!

I appreciate it..I guess I will take it for about 18 months...or less...I would hate to want a baby for so long and then to have to deal with possible birth defects that I may have contributed to...this is all just so unfair.

How long was it before you started seeing results?

I took it while TTC our first. I took it from CD 1 through to ovulation, then stopped each month. For the life of me I cannot remember what dose I took, but it did seem to work for me. My free androgen level dropped while I was taking it.

I haven't been on it since (that was 2003) because I have either been pregnant or nursing since then, and you cannot take it during either of those times.
