Default My fight for laser. . . a dramatic reading!

I've been fighting with navy medicine for months now, trying to get laser hair removal. First, they sent me to a civilian dermatologist who doesn't even do laser.

I cried.

Then they told me that I needed to have my doctor resubmit the referral. When I called the OB/Gyn who had originally sent it, he refused saying that he only did it the first time as a favor. A favor?!

I cried again.

So the other day I hurt myself and was seeing a doctor I had never met before. I figured I had nothing to lose, so I asked him if he would resubmit the request for me. . . and he did!

Tears of joy!

It took me three more weeks to get an appointment, but I finally have one! The consultation is Jan 9 and the first laser day should be Jan 13. This time it's a Navy doctor which means that it won't cost me a dime. I was willing to pay anything, but I'll take free!

Red face Congrats!

Yippee! Isn't it great when things work out. I'm so glad for you. I'm working on getting my insurance to pay for mine. I'm already onto my second Doctor submitting. But, right now I have the time and the inclination to fight for it and so I will continue.

Goodluck, Citrine!

And congrats on the weight loss! I've been on Met for years and I'm still fat. I guess that means it's my fault! LOL

My husband is active duty military, so our insurance pays for just about anything.

Civilian insurance is a bit trickier. Sometimes you can get them to pay but it's not easy. You have to prove that it is caused by a medical problem, that your hormone levels are normal, and that it greatly affects your mental/emotional health. Even then, they don't pay very often.

What? Tricare will pay for laser hair removal? What is the process? Who do I see? How much will they do?

Lala, my hubby is Navy and they paid for my laser hair removal (still in process...did you know that pcos women often require additional treatments over their non-pcos counterparts bc our hair is stubborned?). The process that I went through was to see my pcm (primary care manager) and ask for a referral to a doc who does laser hair removal. I go to an ENT doc. The Dermatology dept also does it. I'm not sure of the process if you live away from a military hospital. I'd call the tricare line and ask if you're not sure of what to do first. Good luck to all the women who have reluctant insurance companies. For women, hair removal is more then a vanity issue.

Are there certain areas they will and won't do? I'd love to have it on my face, arms, stomach, back.....hell, I'd even like to have my upper thighs done!

I'm not sure about that. My consultation is Jan. 9th. I want it from my nose to my toes! I'll let you know what they're going to do.

Ya know, with the budget our country has for its military and its veterans services, I wish that those resources were going to pay to care for elderly and sick veterans, and wounded peoples rehab, etc. The status of our veteran's hospitals is awful.

Yes, I understand that our hair issues affect our self esteem in serious ways. I've been there myself. But ultimately it is a cosmetic issue, and I would rather this be paid for by private insurance than on my tax dollar. Enjoy it. Some of us don't even have health insurance and can't see a doctor for serious illness, let alone have all our hair removed from chin to toes.

Arrow Insurance.

Shellbee,
It is not your fault! What dosage of Metformin have you been on? I have also been following the IR diet while taking the Met. I don't always follow exactly, but generally I try to eat protein with carbs. I just dropped off digital pictures of my hair to the doctor on Monday. I had to grow it out so that it could be noticed in the pics, eck. For me when the hair starts to grow back in it hurts and I get all these painful red bumps and it rubs on my shirt, so I really feel it is not just cosmetic for me. If I'm denied again I will fly to where these doctors are that are deciding my fate and stand right in front of them so that they can see in person what I have been dealing with. Jean
