I need some quick insight. As some of you know, I have never been "officially" diagnosed with PCOS. I have normal periods, I don't have any cyst, etc. However, I do have alot of the other symptoms of PCOS such as the excess hair, skin tags, and darkened skin around my neck.
Well a couple of weeks ago (9/05), I had to go to the hospital because I had a huge abcess in my neck. It wasn't draining and it was getting bigger by the minute. The pain was so intense, I couldn't take it. Instead of waiting to go to the doctor the next morning, I decided I need to go to the hospital and see what they could do.
As most hospital's do, they do bloodwork on you no matter what the problem is. I got my blood drawn and at the time of discharge, they gave me a sheet of paper displaying everything that they had checked. At the bottom, it had "GLUC" and beside that, it read
Final results :
GLUC 107 HH MG/DL (70-99)
I don't know exactly what it means but my interpetation is that my Glucose Levels were 107 which is high and it's supposed to be in the range of 70-99.
Can someone please help me? I hadn't eatten in 6 hours prior to those levels. I may have had something to drink though. I can't remember. This happened about 3 weeks ago. Is that really high? Possibility of diabetes? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I believe a fasting glucose of 107 is pre-diabetes or impared fasting glucose. Diabetes is over 125 I think. Do you have a meter or know someone who has one where you can check your fasting glucose periodically?
i could be wrong, but the way I read your post, I assumed that you were non-fasting when you had your blood drawn. Fasting is usually considered to be 8 hours or longer since eating or drinking anything. Here is a link that discusses this:
Jashobeam - Thanks so much for that link! Look at the chart, it does say pre-diabetes. My aunt has a meter but i'm so scared to use it! lol.
Beelzebubble - Thanks for your reply. It was definately non-fasting. I had been drinking soda the whole intire night prior to going to the hospital. That may be the cause for my elevated levels.
I'm going to call my doctor and see if I can do a "real" fasting test. I'm so nervous though.
I agree with Jash and would say those numbers are indicative of pre-diabetes.
I also wanted to say that I always get boils and I have had quite a few bad ones that I needed lanced. That is how my diabetes was discovered.
I would ask for a glucose tolerance test. I think it is like 3 hours. You go in first thing in the am, fasting. Get your blood drawn then drink a really sugary orange drink and then have you blood drawn and additional 2 or 3 times every hours.
Also, when your body is fighting infection it will affect your sugars.

Thanks gals! You all have been so helpful! I've been worrying myself half crazy about this today. I wasn't fasting so i'm going to assume those numbers were okay for that night. However, i'm still going to go to the doctor in a couple of days and see what they say. Argh, sometimes this can be so frustrating!
That number is fine for non-fasting. So dont worry to much about it. Of course you can start testing yourself so you will know but dont worry much about that number.
