Smile My hair styling tips!

Hi girls,
I would like to share with you all some of my tips for working with hair loss to get your hair to look it's best! I like many of you have gone through the heartache of finding out you have thinning hair, i remember thinking i would be bald after 6 months but here i am a few years later still with some hair to play with.

- HEADBANDS - Your new best friends! They are always in fashion and come in great variety. Try using a thick fabric one towards the front of your head. I sometimes have a little bit of fringe poking out. This looks works well. I can send you photos of this look if you like!

- LENGTH - I have found the ideal length the be mid length, too long and your hair just hangs there and too short you miss out on coverage. My hair is just past my shoulders.

- STYLE - Layers are a must! They instantly give your hair the appearance of volume. A fringe can work well too. My hair is too thin to wear a heavy fringe ( too much scalp shows at the start of the fringe) So i wear one swept to the side. Also wear a jagged hair line instead of one straight part.

- COLOUR - I suggest highlighting your hair a few shades lighter than your natural colour. E.g. light brown highlights with dark brown hair. Try not to go for too much of a contrast as this will make hair look even flatter.

- MAINTENANCE - Try using 'natural' shampoos without harsh chemicals such as sodium laureth sulphate. They do cost you a little more and your hair may need more frequent washing but i think its worth it for your health. There are also plenty of hair thickening shampoos/conditioners and styling products that are good too. I also take hair/skin/nail vitamins.

I hope i have given you some usefull ideas! This is kinda my *hobby* lol

Thanks for the tips j. I have been holding off layering my hair because I was a little bit nervous about how it would look. Now, I feel more confident with getting it layered.

Oh, yes! Certainly do get it layered. You'll LOVE the new-found bounce and body.

...Thanks so much for the styling tips...i definitely will try layers. gotta grow my hair a little longer as I have a short bob-style cut right now. I wish i would have seen your post earlier. I find that if i rinse my hair with ice cold water after i am done shampooing etc., it seems to gain more volume when its' dry. It helps a little......

I agree with the layers, but I have a question about coloring. My hair is sooo thin on top. When I last colored it, my scalp was tinged with the hair color as well, for at least a day. Since then I've been too scared to try to dye it again. Any suggestions on keeping the scalp clear while still coloring all the way to the roots? I'm sure it doens't help that I'm coloring it brown. Blond probably wouldn't have such problems.

It's a bit of a nuisance to do but maybe try using hair foils (like the ones they use when highlighting hair) This might help limit where the dye goes. Have you tried dying your hair with henna rather than normal dye? I haven't tried it but it's a natural alternative. Here's a website with more info
