I cannot believe this right now. I got a letter in the mail saying that they did not approve my application because of medical reasons. I am only 22 years old and I am NOT overweight. I have had 2 minor surgeries in the past 3 years and I am not a smoker. The only reason I can think of that they would deny my application is because of PCOS - for which I am receiving minimal treatment from any doctor. Can you believe this happened to me? It is ridiculous! Now I don't know what health insurance to even look for I am so mad, because I AM HEALTHY! I hardly EVER go to the doctor!

Loser insurance company! I've had bad luck with Blue Cross....do nnnoooot ever go with them. they charged me like a million dollars premium, plus co pay and in the end they still billed me over 200 bucks for just two visits!
That is the company that I applied to! Blue Cross/Blue Shield. I even had them previously under my Father's employment insurance! Those jerks! Anyone have any recommendations on where to go next?

Look in to Assurant Health. I had it for awhile. They offer HSA Accounts which I love. I got employer insurance now or else I would have kept it. My twin still has it.

I would say it's most definitely because of the PCOS. As soon as they see that they think diabetes, infertility treatments, etc. and think that you're too much of a high risk.
It could also be the Effexor that you're on. If I'm not mistaken, insurance some insurance companies will deny you if you have a history/recent history of anti-depressants. Not to mention if you've been on Metformin (even if it wasn't for IR and just for IF), you've got a much better chance of being denied.
The reason you had no problems when you were on your Dad's insurance is because it was through his work. Group plans through employers very, very rarely require you to 'qualify'.
Sorry I don't have any advice for an insurance to go for - I'm in much the same boat.

I don't have any for health all I know is rx insurance, Aetna is almost always horrible when it comes to rx's. (Through work I have Aetna health and Walgreens rx.) Medco tends to be really easy to get rx overrides for any reason (the main health associated with them is united healthcare), Humana, and united healthcare health rx ins. are usually pretty okay, Blue cross, aetna, are both pretty bad when it comes to rx's. It is cheaper for bf to sign up for walgreens perscription savings club than it is to pay for meds through blue cross. Ummm...
I hope you find a company soon. I don't have insurance , it is really hard to manage. I pray everyday I'll stay well- because I can't get sick! It is a major bummer!
Please remember that not all blue cross/shield companies are the same. They all operate independently. Therefore the BCBS here would not be the same BCBS across the country.
Although, I have to say I am not happy with my BCBS right now either!!!! so, I guess they are not the same but they still MIGHT all stink LOL
Blue Cross can be a bit hard to deal with. I used to work for them and still have their insurance through the schoolboard. Generally Blue Cross doesn't decide what prescriptions you can have they just administer the benefits for Medco, or at least that is the way it is here.
I hope you can find something. If they think you are taking Effexor for mood, anxiety or anything like that they won't cover you because most individual insurance plans do not have any benefits for mental and nervous and they would probably assume that Effexor would fall under that even if it were for PCOS.

You might consider finding a broker to do the leg work for you. I use one for work (I do HR), but I have recommended her to several family and friends that needed individual coverage and she has been great at finding it for them. They don't charge you anything, they get their cut from their insurance company.
BC/BS did not deny me back when I applied with them, but they did increase the rates due to PCOS -- they told me so in a letter! Best of luck with getting insurance, it is really important to have it! In the meantime, if you were able to seek some care and have some prescriptions, try Wal-Mart's pharmacy or Target or other low cost pharmacies...$4 for Metformin!

Hi all!! I'm new to this, but it just so happens that something really frustrating happened to me today... which inspired me to make the leap to post. Now if I may vent...
Screw BC/BS...!!! I was just informed today that I was denied ONLY because of my PCOS. I spoke with the underwriter who specifically denied me, and she more or less told me that there were other reasons, but the PCOS is what stopped me from getting coverage first and foremost.
I understand that PCOS is tied to a lot of potential for other diseases/ailments, but if she would have taken the time to do her research, she would have known that I was diagnosed 4 years ago and have had nothing else diagnosed since then--with extensive testing done yearly to monitor me. So why, if the only medication and treatment I've had since I was diagnosed is birth control, is it such a big deal to give me coverage?? There are a lot of girls on birth control for many different reasons... not to mention the THOUSANDS of girls with PCOS. Are they going to deny them all?? I'm so frustrated with health insurance... makes me want to pack up and move to a different country. Most any country has better health care than the US.
....AND.... since I knew I had the potential for a 'pre-existing condition' I agreed to pay the higher premium for the first year. WHY doesn't this condition fall under that agreement?? Ugh, the frustration!
