My lucky story...

I have to say from reading some of these stories that I am one of the lucky cisters. I was just diagnosed yesterday, and have to praise the efficentcy of my family doctor and of the specialist she sent me to. From the beginning:

I started seeing AF when I was 12. It was never normal though, I could go months without any visits, and when it did come it could last weeks. When I was 17 I started getting the depo shot which stopped AF completely. That was 1996, in September of 2000, I got off depo and started trying to find a pill because I was worried about the long term affects of the depo and trying to conceive later in life. I had to try three times until I found something that didn't make me violently ill or make my face swell up. With the last pill I tried I still had to take a pill the morning after the first pill of the cycle so that I wouldn't vomit but it didn't matter to me I was off the shot. In September of 2001, I went for the yearly fun visit with my doc and my blood pressure had sky rocketed. I came off all birth control at this time. In November of 2001 I had my last visit from AF. I went to see my doctor two weeks ago, she ordered a bunch of blood tests and an ultra sound. The blood work came back less then a week later (before the ultra sound even) and she got an appointment set up for me with a repro/endo. She told me about the elevated testosterone so I did research between the call and my appointment with Dr. Lapa. I tell you I was scared to death by what I was reading. One of my biggest fears in life was not to be able to get pregnant and raise a family, and from what I was reading there was a good chance that I would never be able to do that. I saw him yesterday for the first time and have to say he is as nice as my normal doctor. He put me on 1000mg of metformin and wants me to have a cholesterol panel done before I have to see him again next month for my follow-up.

I say that I'm lucky because there are so many women who have to suffer for years before they are diagnosed properly, and by the time they are diagnosed their chances for having biological children is minimal. I am so very lucky to have such great doctors that diagnosed me so quickly and I am now told that taking the metformin my chances of having children should be close to normal.
